Kudo's the NEF ... Again!
« on: September 01, 2006, 08:19:36 AM »
On Aug 8th, I sent my Handi .280 back to the factory (with prior approval from Gordon) to have the barrel lock-up looked at and for a trigger job.  The lock-up had recently became loose and the accuracy was going away.

UPS delivered th rifle this past Monday, 8/28.  The invoice indicated "No Charge" and included in the box was a copy of the test target that showed a 1", 3 shot group at 100 yds with two shots through the same hole using Winchester ammo.  The trigger appears much better than before.

I contacted NEF today and was told the barrel had been replaced. They seemed a bit rushed, so I didn't make any other inquiries.  Twenty days from the time I shipped it until I had it back in my hands again.  Not to bad, I think!

Thanks NEF and Customer Service!

How many rds had you put thru it before it shot loose? I'm starting to get a little worried about this term.
Also, how badly did this affect the accuracy?
I have not had any problems with my old H&R hornet and  with my Rossi.

I probably had 200 rounds through it.  Most of them Rem 150 gr Core Locts with a few 140's thrown in.  The rifle was good for 1" - 1 1/2" three shot groups.  Lately, I couldn't get any consistant groups.  I'd fire a shot and it would hit point of aim, then the next shot would be no where near the first shot and the third shot no where near the other two.  I went through the usual tuning practices typical with these guns, but this particular rifle has never been finicky.  I could always bang out three shots in succession and it would group well. The only modification was the O ring.

I removed the scope mount and remounted it, again, with blue Loc tite.  I even changed scopes (both Bushnell Banners).  Then I noticed after placing the barrel back into the receiver that if I wrapped my hand around the barrel and rolled it back and forth, I would hear and feel the barrel knock against the receiver.  As a test, I placed a piece of masking tape on the barrel hinge and when it was re-installed on the frame, I could not duplicate the knock.  This is when I called NEF and spoke to Gordon.

Anyway, its locks up good now.  Hopefully I'll get a chance to test it this weekend, after Ernesto heads north.

Glad to hear you good luck with CS. I sent my rifle in twice for repair and twice they sent it back to me saying there was nothing wrong with it. But the barrel latch had one of the ears broken off. I dont think they even looked at it.

I just sent my .280 barrel off to my smith for rechambering to .280AII, if he's not worried about it, I don't think anyone should!!

Ok, the implication of this post seemed to be that some of them are shooting loose.

I haven't seen or heard of many that have had this problem..and saying that a few out of many thousand produced that have these problems is something to be concerned over is wrong, especially since NEF's C/S department works their butts off to make things right on the few that actually have problems....There once was a group of folks that posted here a while back...and seems like all they did was complain at every opourtunity about how lousy the Quality Control was on the Handi's..When in fact the vast majority of folks who posted on the subject were quite happy with them...Even after we ran several polls on the subject..they couldn't understand why such an inexpensive rifle was giving them such fits...and many of them swore off of the Handi rifle for good...Granted..some did have problems..but from the way a few of them chose to complain..someone who didn't know anything about them..would walk away with a totally wrong impression of the rifle...Luckily..NEF started doing a better job of assembling them..and now we have much better fitting without stripped screws..and much better trigger pulls..and from the ones I personally have owned..much better lock ups..I'm sure there will always be a bad one produced from time to time...and you can also be assured...if there is something wrong with it...NEF will take care of the problem post-haste...because they are one of the better companies as far as their customer service response goes...just as I feel the original post depicts..
