How do you carry your Super Blackhawk Hunter????
« on: August 09, 2006, 10:10:32 AM »
I carry my Super Blackhawk Hunter strongside in a Galco leather holster.  There has to be a better way to carry because this hogleg is so heavy that it takes quite a bit just to keep my pants at waist height.  I would like to concentrate on hunting, not keeping my pants up.  How do you carry your SBHH?  Any suggestions will really be appreciated.  Thanks!!

I bought a cross draw holster for my BH. With the 7 1/2" barrel it was making me walk funny and made my back hurt. The cross draw works a lot better and doesn't get in your way when sitting down. A good quality 2 1/2" wide pistol belt helps alot also.

I have used most types of holsters for my Hunter, and settled on an Uncle Mikes bandoleer style that hangs across my chest and is anchored to my belt on the Lt side. I have a Millet reddot scope on it and this is the quickest and most comfortable way to carry it. This is when the handgun is the primary hunting weapon. If I'm just carrying a handgun in addition to a rifle I would carry my S&W Mod 29, or something smaller in a belt holster.

I made a loop holster for my Black Hawk.  Used fairly soft leather and a nylon holster belt.   When holstered, the leather wraps around the pistol holding it securely and with the hammer loop it's rock solid in the holster.  If I get tired of it banging my hip, riding an ATV or when sitting in a climber, I configure it cross draw, tying the thigh loop to my pants belt.

My hunting holster is a generic soft nylon type that I wear cross draw outside of my bib overalls but inside my jacket using a 2-1/2" pistol belt to hold my Vaquero.
Works great for standing, sitting or even laying prone as I had tested this Coyote hunting.
Hardly know that the thing is there.
Additional benifits is the ability to snake it out quickly & quietly while sitting at the deer stand.

Ditto the Uncle Mike's bandoleer for a scoped SBHH. I removed the flap cover, preferring the strap to secure when walking.

I replied to this same question on another post. It looks like more replies are being posted to this one. My other reply...

"A holster I WOULD NOT recommend is the Bianchi HuSH Holster. It has a metal snap on the retainer strap that fastens to a plastic snap on the holster. I bought one last year and the plastic snap is already showing signs of wear. I used to really like Bianchi holsters, but this one is cheaply made. I don't know why they couldn't use 2 metals snaps instead of a metal and a plastic. At around $80, it cost double what an Uncle Mike's cost and is not any better".

Galco makes a shoulder holster called the Kodiak that looks good.

Thanks for the replies fellows.  Went to the gun show yesterday and bought a nylon shoulder holster.  It gets the weight distributed pretty good.  Took alot of adjustments for me to finally get it sized right.  The real test will take a full day in the woods to make sure I don't come back with blisters under my arms.  Anyway, I just wanted to thank all ya'll for the replies.  I hope I can help you out one day.

I found that a separate gun belt helps.  Rather than putting it on my pants belt.  1 3/4in  wide or more  is good.  With the belt down on the hips rather than the waist gives a better distribution of the weight.

I use pistol packaging.  The Bandito models...

I love it because you buy one bandoleer and mutiple holsters...I use it for all my rugers and my 686.  The holsters also double as a hip holster.

Ditto on the crossdraw holster and seperate gun belt. I use a 24 loop cartridge belt that is 3 1/4" wide. No more pulling my pants up all the time.

I carry all my heavy guns on a shoulder strap, using regular belt holsters & a piece of harness leather to adapt the holsters to a regular belt.   I built a larger holster to carry all my scoped revolvers.  Wear it over jackets or just a shirt by adjusting the length with the belt buckle.  Works good for me & the hip pain is gone.
