G2 or Encore 223

Want to get my feet wet with a TC, but which one, want a short walking around rifle in 223. pros cons of the G2/ Encore? ???

T/c is making a 18 in 223 barrel for the g-2 you may also be able to find a 16 in barrel for sale.  that is what I have on my original contender frame  with its 4 power Nikon I average 1.5" at 100 yards  I did better with the 3x9 but I like the weight with the 4 power

This is from my Contender 223 at 100 yards. I have a Leupold 4-14 variable on it. But less than 1.5" at 100 yards is very do-able. The Contender is a nice lightweight gun. I don't have a G-2, but I have a new ProHunter. I also like the PH, but if your looking at weight and just the 223, the G2 is probably the way to go.

Just for info, my G2 weighs in at just a shade over 6 pounds scoped, and is 2 inches shorter than my Marlin 336, which is also a great walking around rifle. 

My G2 is in 30-30, so the .223 would weigh a touch more (more steel in barrel due to smaller bore).  The only advantage to the  Encore that I can see is the Encore can use standard higher pressure (i.e. Magnum) rifle rounds if you get a spare barrel.  However, the G2 will accept rimfires with just a barrel change and a flick of the selector switch.

I suggest the G2.

I have both Contender and Encore carbines. I fine the Contender to short and lite to shoot well off handed, but built my own fore arm from a piece of 2 " square Walnut 14 " lond. I just groved it for the barrel rounded the corners and put in a hanger bar. This added weight really improved it for off hand shooting. The Encore have the advantage of being able to fire big game round and do shoot better off handed. It`s really personal choice.

If you want to shoot rimfire barrels on the same frame, get a G2 Contender.  If you want to shoot larger centerfire cartridges on the same frame, get the Encore.  If you play around with loads on either frame you should definitely be able to get 1 inch at 100 yards and with a bit more work probably 1/2 to 3/4 inches.  The trigger, out of the box, is quite a bit better on the Contender than the Encore.

An advantage to the Encore for me is that they make man sized composite stocks for them.  The composite carbine stock for the Contender looks like it should go on a toy gun so I got a walnut thumbhole stock for mine which I really like.  I really prefer composite stocks for hunting though.
