Powders for the 270 WSM
« on: September 24, 2006, 07:43:02 AM »
I recently picked up a 270 WSM. Its a Savage Varmit Model with the heavy fluted SS 26 inch barrel. My first loads were with IMR4350. I took the next to the top load in The Sierra Manual for the 130 Grain Pro-Hunter bullet. According to the manual, it should yield about 3200 FPS. My loads chronographed at 3050 fps. What powders are you guys using in this caliber. I have been told that a slower powder would prbably work better. This load I tried is extremely accurate, 1/2 inch three shot groups so I can live with that. Thanks.
shot placement is everything.

I can get around 3250fps with 130gr Interbonds loaded with 67gr of RL-19. Just trying some Ramshot Magnum which claims 3300, but will have to wait and see. H4831 gave me just shy of 3200fps.

I just got back from the range and it looks like Ramshot Magnum will give me 3300fps or a little higher with the max load. I'm getting 3280fps and I'm still below max with no signs of pressure at all. Accuracy is very good as well, 0.83" for 3rds at 100yds.
