Cleaning and storing muzzleloader question?

When you put your muzzleloader up for the season, what do you lubricate it with to keep it from getting surface rust in the barrel? Thanks

Yes!

Don't buy the cheapest oil in the store either. Get a name brand like Rem-Oil, Breakfree CLP, Shooters Choice, Knight. One can goes a long-long way... many years. Don't forget the exterior too. I alternate the exterior using Ballistol one time, Breakfree another time, furniture polish without wax (Endust) once or twice, automotive silicone spray sometimes, even Kroil... etc.... etc.

Use the gun oil/preservative of your choice - just clean out the oil before shooting.

I cut a little piece of rag a foot long and one inch wide. I stuff it down the bore, making sure to leave an inch of it sticking out as a flag to remind me it is there.
If you house gets cool at night, then warmer during the day, you are cruising to get condensation inside the bore unless you shut off the air supply to the bore.
In fact I leave my litte rag in the bore year round.

BREAK FREE CLP (cleaner - lubricant - preservative), it's what the military uses, and I have never had a speck of rust. I still use the hot water with a few drops of Dawn for cleaning, then dry patches. The heat in the barrel should evaporate any microscopic water droplets, then coat everything (inside and out) with Break Free CLP. You can buy a 4 oz. bottle of oil w/straw (not aerosol) for around $6 at most Sporting Goods Stores and worth every penny.
