40 lb broad head recomendations.
« on: August 02, 2006, 05:24:18 AM »
My wife is going to try bowhunting, and has been practicing for several weeks now.  She is shooting a 40lb (absolutely can't do 50lb.) Parker BuckShot with a 25" draw firing Carbon Express Thunderstorm (8.3 grans per inch +nock, insert, and fletching.)  Right now she is practicing with 90 grn field points and doing a respectable job.  She will limit herself to 20 yard shots, as the bottom seems to fall out after that point and I don't know if there is the energy needed for a humane kill past 20 yrds, which brings me to my question.

Do any of you have recomendations for a broadhead to use for such a light set up.  I am thinking 85 grn G5 Montec as it is a cut-to-tip construction tri-blade with small diameter (1") which should aide penetration.  Please share any experience or recomendations you might have, as I have no experience with a light set up.

Thank you,
WylieKy

I've never seen a 40 pound broadhead, bet that takes one heck of a bow and strong arrow to use.  :o

On a more serious note I prefer the NAP Thunderhead over any I've tried. I think it's made in an 85 and for sure is in a 100 or so grain weight. I use the 125s.

Graybeard is right.  They make an 85, 100, & 125.  I shoot 100's with 60lb draw for deer/elk. My bow shoots field points and the broadheads the same with my setup so practicing easy/simple.

wylieky - What % let off is she shooting?  Can you up her to an 80% let off? (assuming she's at 65%)

If you cannot get over 40#s comfortably I would strongly consider a cut on contact broadhead.  There are quite a few on the market from the old standby, Zwickie, to  other 3 blade cut on contact.  I prefer Muzzy or Thunderheads but My tendency would be to go with this type head at closer to 50#'s.

Thanks for the input!

And Graybeard,
The bow is called the Ballista Bob, from SiegeWorks, Inc. ;D

It is manufactured by those that think that nothing with less kinetic energy than a .458 Lott is sufficient for whitetailed deer.

Try to shoot the same weight field tip as  your broadhead, I can suggest the 90gr Wasp SST.

Im with Longwinters...Definitely go Cut on Contact with that set up. Check out Magnus Stinger 2-Blades (You can get 85 grains), they are scary sharp, and will hit right with your field points...
Good luck!
