O ring info for me?
« on: September 05, 2006, 12:16:54 PM »
Ok, im ready to get overwhelmed. What does freefloating the barrel do? I have a handi in .223 and in 4570 the .223 been to the range many times and never let me down. so what exaclty does the o ring do? does it make every rifle shoot better? Why would it matter about the forearm touching the barrel? have any of you ever tried shooting with out a forearm before? If the forearm needs to be "free" from the barrel then why not shoot the rifle without any forearm at all? I mean i know that theres a purpose for it and all but i guess it just dont make much sense to me yet. So if you would, please enlighten me and humor my ignorance. Thanks. Henry.

So wait, i still dont understand what exactly the o ring does. i know that the barrel viberates and that the o ring would probably help dampen the viberations. but i want to know how. and also, do any of you have pics of the rubber o ring on the rifle? That would be greatly appriciated. Thanks. Henry.

ok ,i read the FAQ. but does that mean that with the ring on the forearm lug it frees the forearm of the barrel. so it would be like shooting the gun with out the forearm, in a way. Right? Correct me if i am wrong on this but its my understanding that The barrel viberates no matter what (when its being fired that is) and if there is constant pressure on it (the for are being bedded against it) then it can throw your accuracy. so by putting the ring on you release the pressure on the barrel and the barrel is free to viberate without being pressured. Am i right? I mean, im going to college but not as  an english major! I just want to make sure that i understand everything like its meant to be. Thanks Guys!

Sounds like you got it.
It works pretty good with most all wood stock Handis I have used it on, but not with my synthetics I tried. The forarm still touches the barrel. It always will to a small degree, due to the forearm screw.
Some Handi's like this method, and some do not. Thats why some have gone to bedding the forearm to aim for consistant pressure through out all the barrel that touchs the forearm, and to tighten up things if you will. Some have placed objects under the barrel to make different pressure points. I believe Tim had to do this with a 45-70 of his to settle it down, the Manlicher Stocked one if I remember correctly.
Personally I don't like anything to touch my barrel, it's kind of a pet peve I guess.
Here's another couple good reads:

Hope this helps you some more.
