WTB factory 6.5X55 Swede ammo cheap...where?
« on: August 28, 2006, 07:41:52 AM »
Have finally paid off my layaway, and am the proud owner of a '96 Swede, in a dandy mannlicher stock.  Have any of you had recent luck with 6.5X55 ammo on the internet at good prices?  139g SP would be primary choice - would like to stay around $10/box if I can.  Is this reasonable, or have been in the sticks too long?  'Round my parts about as good as I can do is darn near $20/box for Fed, Win, or Rem factory stuff.  I'm ok with S&B, Wolf, or any others...just want to shoot!

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Get some brass, and a Lee loader (for starters), and load your own.  Cant get much cheaper then that!

Get some loaded privi, shoot it, and save the brass.

Congrats on your selection of a fine caliber.  I ordered ten boxes of 6.5 X 55 from Aim Surplus a couple of years ago.  It was less than $7 a box (with shipping) and is good reloadable brass but it did have full metal jacketed bullets.  I think the headstamp was FNC and may have been made in Portugal. It shot pretty good and I have reloaded it several times.   The prices of ammo have increased the last couple of years but there should be some out there for less than $10 a box. You also might check with Grafs & Sons as they have free shipping when you buy a certain amount.

Reloading is the way to go no matter what you shoot. You can fine tune the loads to your gun and save money in the process. Well maybe save money as once you start to reload it grows on you and you keep buying. Still it is not rocket science a simple reloading outfit will reload shells just fine with out much cash outlay. I second the Lee stuff it is mostly all I use.  You can buy a simple lee hand press for 20 bucks and the dies for about the same. The lee dipper measure kits work fine if you do not want to buy a powder measure right away. With the hand press you can reload anywhere do not need a bench set up. I have two of them and reload 30/30 to 45/70 with out any problems. In fact it takes a bit of muscle but I even resized my 284 brass to use in my K 31 with out no problems. Lee makes good stuff for the money and a easy on the pocket book for a start into the reloading game.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I use the S&B 131 gn soft point or the S&B 140 gn ball for all my shooting in my 6.5 Swedes.  Both rifles are so incredibly accurate with S&B factory box ammo I seriously doubt I could do better by reloading.  Last I read the ammo was going for around $10/box, which is pretty reasonable.  I find it in Cheaper than Dirt, the Shotgun News and a few other places.

But, if you plan on shooting a lot, as in lots and lots, then it is a wise move to learn to reload and save yourself a bunch of $.  HTH.  Mikey.

Portugese and E. European 6.5x55 here at pretty decent prices:

http://www.ammunitionstore.com/

I bought a bunch of Federal 6.5x55 from this fellow.  Decent price on Federal 139 sp, ($12/box with shipping included, 8 box min), he also has Wolf Gold FMJ 6.5x55 for $100/10 boxes, shipping included.  That ought to keep you out there popping paper @ 300 yards.
