Ultra Comp.
« on: September 04, 2006, 07:38:07 PM »
I know H&R used to make the Ultra in a compensated model in .270 and .30/06.  I am assuming they only made this model for a short time because I can't seem to find one anywhere for sale or trade.  Anybody got an answer about this particular model?

I've got a .30-06UC and a .270UC plus an extra .270 UC barrel. I had another '06 UC barrel, but I sold it on ebay. As far as I know, they were made in 2003, my '06 is an original that I bought from Mac made in 2003, the other I got from him also, but it was fitted at the factory as an accessory barrel.

They're also great shooters!! I thought I had a pic of Mac's group for the .270UC, but I don't, maybe he'll post it. The group below was shot with 200gr Nosler Partitions and Rl22.

I think, but I'm not positive that he shot the postal match with the UC too.

Hi Quick,
Appreciate the pics.  That green laminated one is particularly sharp.  Looks like the brake and barrel have no seam whatsoever.  That's really nice.  I'm without a Handi at the present time but I have had a few in the past and I love them.  Just haven't been lucky enough to find any for sale.  I wonder, since these were just made in 2003 if they might have some collector value later on in years to come.  Thanks again.

Thanks, and you're welcome!! A fella can always hope that they rise in value and appreciate instead of depreciating!! There are some rare calibers too that were only made for a year or 2 like the .357Maximum, 7x64 Brenneke, 7x57, .444 Marlin and RMEF .35 Whelen. I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity and funds to get the Brenneke, Ultracomps and Whelen, had chances for the .444 and 7x57 and probably should have bought them, but passed them up, will probably regret that, but at least others got the opportunity to have a piece of H&R history, so I don't regret it too much. :D

Here you go Quick...

This was with the RTV bedding on the 270 Ultra-Comp fore-arm..The groups were shot over a couple of days time period on the same target.. Also off hand  shooting with a sling..(2 shots left and right of top center group)..The load by the way was with the 130 grain Federal Fusion Ammo and using my Burris 3x9 Ballistic Plex scope..I was playing around with the various mils on it that day too..and using a 6'oclock hold..came in right at 2-1/2" high off hand for me...It is a very good shooting load..

I believe you think a lot like I do.  Sometimes I see people who are really green with envy because someone got something they couldn't have, etc.  I've always felt like if I couldn't have something, I'm glad someone else can.
Sure wish I'd known you had that '06UC for sale on e-bay.  I'd have built the gun around it. Does this comp make the muzzle blast deafeningly loud?  I've read a lot about brakes and how loud they are supposed to be but with the neurological problems I have, I can always put plugs in my ears and cover them up with muffs.  Just have to lessen recoil as much as possible.  Appreciate your advice and pointers.

I don't notice it when  I'm wearing muffs at the range, but one fella shooting in the baffled position next to me did! And he was shooting a .300win mag black rifle with the big BMG type brake on it, he actually asked me what the heck I was shooting cuz it was bothering him!!! :o I haven't shot it unprotected, but Aaron(myarmor) has one, and he says it's loud. Recoil is nice tho, even the 200gr partitions at a mid level load felt like a .243 or .30-30 and muzzle jump is non existent. I do wear a pair of Sportears when I'm hunting to protect what hearing I have left, FWIW.

To me...the 30-06 Ultra-Comp wasn't bad at all..I shot it with several different loads..and it really wasn't too bad...Now...the 270 UC is a different story all together...It is deafening without plugs..I tried it 1 time..just to see..and I will never ever do that stupid act again...Both are pussy cats to shoot with..and if & when you find one in either caliber...buy it...

Oh I will, Mac.  You can bet on that.  I never shoot any more without some type of hearing protection.  Growing up, I never thought of it much and back in the 1970's we had a band and had some Marshall stacks that were so loud if you stood next to them, your pants would flutter from the sound waves.  Again, didn't think much of it then but now I have to say "What?" all the time and it drives my wife nuts sometimes. Does me, too.  I get tired of not being able to hear as well as I should.  I've done a lot of shooting without hearing protection, too.  Thanks for the post.

I used mine (now Darat100s) UltraComp -06 last year deer hunting. I ended up making a nice long shot on a doe off hand. They are very good barrels, with the threaded Muzzle break nicely done..hardly any seam at all. I shot mine with the break on and unscrewed off as well. With it on, the blast was formidable, no matter what grain or load I shot. And lets just say you won't make any friends at the range with this little number  ;D
I took it off and found it enjoyable as well. Only with heavy loads (180gr +) did I notice a differance in recoil. And there is where the muzzle break seemed to shine to me.
Only down side to them, for me, is noise... unprotected in a hunting situation they are loud as HE!!... and the muzzle blast is distracting. If recoil can throw you off, so can an unexpected face full of blast  :o... I admit though I always shot off a bench longer than my rifles, so it does pick up the escaping gas. Kind of a trade off here.
If you do get one just be mindful. Regular ear plugs will still "leak" sound in. A good set of muffs are a wise choice.
Like I said and many can attest to, they are great barrels. But they do have their downside as well.
I loved it for practice, but for hunting, I would just assume take it off. A decent Smith can rig up a thread protector for it at a small charge. A good invesment for dual purpose use.

Thanks Aaron.  I had given thought to a thread protector for a hunting situation.  My 'smith lives about a mile away from me so that's convenient, too. I shoot out behind my own place here so I don't have to worry about being inconsiderate to the other folks around me. I've been blessed to not have any neighbors other than cattle and I do have to be mindful of where they are when I shoot.  Congratulations on the long offhand shot and the doe!  I'm waiting for the first opportunity to put some fresh tenderloins on the smoker!

I have to say, I got to shoot my new 30-06 ultra-comp I got from Aaron last night.  That is one awesome rifle.  I can't understand why they would only make that for a short time.  I definately have a new favorite.

That one was made in 2000, so they didn't make them just in one year as mine was made in 2003.....FWIW.

Quick

I absolutely love this 30-06 ultra comp I got from Myarmor.  He never got around to loading for the 30-06.  Mind to share what yours likes.  Maybe I will get lucky and will work in mine as well.

THanks

The only load I worked up was 56gr Rl22 and the 200gr Nosler Partition, got to do it again tho, I have since found out the Rl22 is very temp sensitive. I'll probably use H4831SC.
