Which Loose Powder Are You using This Year and Why ?

Would like to get the opinions of those who have tried / gone back and forth between :

Goex -  Goex Pinnacle  -   BlackMag3  -  777


I've  used   777  in  loose  powder  and   pellets.....Done the stuck breech plug, crud ring, misfire (pellets) thing and looking for a

good alternative loose powder and  in 2FF  or 3FFF

For TC Hawken  .50   Percussion 1:48  28 " bbl    and to maybe use in my .50 huntsman

What are you shooting it in? You mention breech plug problems and other inline issues, if this is pertaining to your TC Hawken, T7 or Goex should work fine. The breech plug issue is easy to fix, but that's for another forum.

I would like to shoot it in my Hawken...And I have never fired a sidelock MZLDR, only inlines and break in halfs.

Sorry I wasnt clear enough...     My 777  Powder / Pellets Experience is with my NEF Huntsman .50 Cal...

Due to those expeiences and my thinking that any crud build up etc... is going to be alot harder to clean up in a Hawken than a

Break - In - Half  Huntsman...I was hoping for a good alternative to use in both guns...Read good things on here  in old posts about 

Black Mag 3 and Goex and wanted some input from anyone who is still using them or changed to a diff. brand and why.

If it wont clog up a Hawken and people like its performance then I'll use it for both

I've only shot Goex in my caplocks and flinters, but I've shot a lot of T7 in my inlines using musket caps, never had a problem with the fouling ring or crud ring as they call it, I think that is an issue associated with the 209 primers which aren't legal here. If Goex was easy to find around here, I would never have tried T7, but since no one sells it here, I started using the T7. One thing nice about it, I can use less of it for the same power, so in that respect, it's good, but at $14-$17 a pound, it's still spendy. I have just enought Goex 3f and 4f to keep my flinter running for a while, tho!

PM me or ask in the Modern or Huntsman forum about breech plug issues with T7.

Nothing beats real black powder for ignition speed, reliability, and accuracy.
My suggestion would be to do everything possible to get a can or two of Goex 3F...once you use it you'll never go back to anything else.

If you are having too many issues with 777, then Pyrodex P (Pistol powder) or Goex FFF would be my next two choices.

UNLESS....

How much  (roughly)  is the cost of Swiss and Goex 3FFF per pound ?

If Swiss, what exact type and grade ; # of F's  ?

Swiss cant be as bad $ as 20 high powered rifle rounds for $15-$20 a box or losing a few $10+ hunting arrows with 5" feathers and a
Pure Titanium broad head      or can it ?

I know that 777 loose powder  isnt cheap and I cringe every time I think about the " 2 "  Boxes of 777 defective pellets had to throw out a year ago because of misfires...half or more of the pellets were very light grey over 40-50% of the pellet...and no they werent supposed to be that way.

Heck, considering how far I have to go to get to a range @$3.oo a gallon the powder is the cheap part.



Oh, and I got the breech plug all figured out but 777  still makes a mess...( HINT choke tube lube and  2+ breech plugs ) but thats for another forum

I have a inline that shhots great with T-7 so I tried it and pyrodex in my hawken.I could not get a group at any range.I bought a pound of Goex 3f and it works great in my hawken.

I can find no one in my area that even sells Black powder
anymore? I am reduced to substitutes. I use Triple 7.
You folks know of anywhere to order BP from
that will not empty my wallet?

Bill, you're using a Wonderwad + patch?

Yes...wonderwad for a firewall to protect the patch, gives a better gas seal, boosts velocity with the same powder charge, tightens groups in rifles, and puts more lube in the bore.

Same thing...the name "Wonderwad" is the actual Oxyoke product trademarked name for their "wool like" wads.
Bore button is a slang / generic term for them

(like the slang / generic term "bore butter" is for Wonder lube 1000 or Natural Lube 1000)

Graf & Sons sells a private label powder, made by Wano that is certainly as good as Goex, and a buck a pound cheaper.  You can order on line, they pay the shipping, you pay the hazmat fee of $25. You can get 25 lbs in a single order, or less as your wallet dictates. You can mix and match f sizes to suit. I don't use anything else now. You might want to make up your mind pretty quick, though there was an explosion at the plant.

Oxyoke invented and copyrighted the names "Wonderlube 1000"  and  "Wonderwads".

When they began selling contracts sales to companies like TC, CVA, Traditions, Remington, etc, each company had to come up with their own names to call them...couldn't use Oxyoke's copyrighted names.

TC sells Oxyoke "Wonderlube 1000" under their name of Natural Lube 1000;
Both are generically referred to as "bore butter".

TC sells Oxyoke "Wonderwads" under the generic name of bore buttons;
