Im always skiddish when it comes down to this stuff cause you can mess a lot of stuff up mesing around and it can affect you alot if you dont have spare parts lying around. So i was just wondering if any of you had done a hammer job on your guns and if you could, post a pic! i wanta see how some of em turned out!

Has anyone ever failed at this attempt? I figured maybe id get more responses out of this than who has accomplished this. Who knows? I guess wel just have to see.

After reading these NEF/H&R posts for some time it occurs to me that many people perform, or would like to perform the same minor improvements to their handi rifle. One would hope that someone at NEF/H&R would monitor this and other targeted sites to see what their customers prefer in the handi rifles and make design changes to incorporate the improvements. Some come immediately to mind are:

1. Rubber 'O' ring on the forearm stud, gotta be really cheap and most folks do it.
2. Low profile hammer. Would probably take a tooling change, but it sure would make a better configuration when mounting a scope on the rifle.
3. A design change that would permit a switch between extractor and ejector. From the article about making a temporary change to extractor it would seem that a 'minor' engineering change could be made that would include this feature.
4. A trigger stop, just drill and tap a hole and install a lockable set screw.

While I'm dreaming.......how about an adjustable trigger?

Ah well, I guess tinkering with the handi rifle is one of the reasons we love them

Henry1, the reason most don't do the hammer mod is because it requires disassembly of the trigger group, which can be a daunting task for anyone that's not a tinkerer!! Lots of novices have done their triggers, but it isn't for everyone. Most of those that have done the trigger job, state that it wasn't as bad as they anticipated, it's a pretty simple process if you read Perklo's and Raynor's instructions, doing a hammer mod at the same time would be a piece of cake if you have the basic tools, ie: grinder or dremel, if not, it wouldn't be too easy.

Roudy, a factory extractor has no common parts with the ejector that I can see externally, they appear to be totally different, the underlug is totally different. The extractor appears to be a gear or cog driven mechanism as opposed to the spring driven ejector. I haven't had any motive to tear one apart for examination, and no one else has either.....yet!

I haven't tried the method Tim used yet, but I have..carefully I might add.. grinded a bit off the top of my hammer on one of my receivers. There's plenty of hammer there, and with the Spur it made for mounting low rings very easy. I still don't see why the need to have such a high hammer.

Since I don't have mine yet (on order), Can one use weaver low rings and clear the hammer?

I have no qualms about doing the metal work the hammer, its the bluing/protecting the metal that concerns me...

Aaron, when you did your hammer, did you preheat the hammer like it says to do in the sticky? If you dont preheat it and you just ground some of it off what would be the problem? would it decrese the hardness of the metal making the hammer week?

Hemry1, if you read the entire hammer mod thread, you'll see that there are 2 methods, the addition of the winchester hammer extension and then later, Fred's method of reshaping the hammer to use the factory extension, Fred's method could be done very carefully while the hammer is still on the rifle.

Ok, im wondering now though, is the scope right level with your eye? or do you still have to move your face so that you get the whole circle? I wished i had my rifle in my dorm so i could give you guys a pic, but what i did was, I took a peice of foam and slid it under the shell holder while it was on the rifle. this elevated my cheek position whitch gave me a clear sight picture when i was looking through my scope. But i dont want to have to do that on my .243 and was thinking of doing the hammer mod. I wasnt going to do it if i had to take it apart. but if i could do it with the gun still together (grinding the hammer down with it still in the receiver) then i might do it. but if it didnt help much then i would just do what i did with the .223.

I went back and read over both methods. Turns out I used Freds and didn't even know it

I did the same, just turn the spur facing the other way and slowly grinded off the top and smoothed it off. And touched it up with a little blue. I did this to one of my SB-1 receivers, it's worked fine.
