It's my opinion that the bullets tumbled and exited backwards pulling the opened petals back to the original unfired direction and they exited base first.

I have quite a few phopts now from people across the country showing recovered X bullets with the petals bant backwards just as I have written here.

Look at the bullet on the right below. It's clear this bullet opened up, and then the petals seem to have folded back to the original position. It's certain that this bullet tumbled just by looking at it.

I'm don't think the answer was as well thought out as if Ty actually saw the results in person. Since he did not see then his opinion is based only on what he has seen and what his understanding of the conditions were.

I agree skin is elastic, but that's not relevent to the size of the hole. If the bullet was fully expanded the hole would be bigger then bore diameter. Barnes has statements like:  "Four razor sharp petals" thats the biggest pile of hogwash I have read from a bullet maker. I've never yet seen a recovered bullet that was even close to sharp much less razor sharp. For goodness sakes they give expanded bullets away at the shows they do. Would you be handing out razor sharp things to people to carry in thier pockets?

That "razor sharp" statement unfortuntely leaves me wondering about any marketing statment they would use as a relpy to any question asked of them.

Look at the photo you be the judge.

Wow I have never seen an X with the petals pulled forward like that.  I have seen the petals missing though and attributed that to cal size holes.  Maybe I'll stick to my interbonds and partition types.

Thanks,

JJ

I got an answer from barnes also when they became available locally that did not make alot of sense. It involved a 257 Weatherby and several whitetail deer with a 100gr X bullet at 3500+.  The first deer I shot with it, behind the shoulder, broadside, I centered it perfectly, ran off without a bloodtrail at all in a thick area and was found the next day, with a pencil sized exit hole. Two more deer were shot with that gun and load that week and were nearly lost due to no blood trail to speak of, both with good hits. Barnes said that due to the hi speed that the petals must have came off, hense the small exit holes. I dont think that they opened at all. I heard a few rumors of hard bullets the first year or two. The same gun with 100gr partitions the previous year killed 5 deer instantly, but I did not get big exit holes, only around nickle size, I belive only the back half was left to exit on those due to the bullet impact and upset. I believe if the X had upset like the partition and lost it petals it would have killed as well as the partition did and the exit hole and blood trails would have not made any difference.
