uberti highwall??
« on: November 10, 2006, 01:40:01 PM »
im thinking abt getting one tomorrow if i get some good reviews on em
i cant afford the higher dollar ones as im gonna have to trade off a couple of shooters just to afford the uberti
the one im thinking of is the deluxe model with checkered wood pistol grip 30inch octagon barrel
it has a single trigger and if i remember correctly a cleaning kit in the butt
i noticed the sights leave alot to be desired and they will go pretty quick and be replaced by a globe front with spirit level and a decent tang rear
anything good or bad i should know abt this shooter???
thanks

Well I can't say how good they shoot.....yet.....  I picked up a Cimarron/Uberti 1885 in 38-55 lastnight.  It has the upgraded sights and Dbl set trigger option.  I'll post with a range report when I can...  ;)

Well, I took the 38-55 out today and with 2 different loads it showed a perference.  At 100yds 1st load of sr4759 with a 245gr cast bullet sized .380 grouped 3-4 inches.  2nd load of IMR 4227 with same bullet put 7 of 8 inside a 2in circle. the 1st shot was about 1in low and outside the group.
I didn;t care for the insert I was useing in the front sight, the peep inside the peephole one. At 50yds it was ok but, hard to use at 100yds with the targets i was useing. Overall I'm impressed with the rifle and while its different than my win/browning 1885's it has a place in my rack.  I might have to check out a Low wall in 32-20..... ::) ::)

I've been working with my Uberti 38-55 for about a month now. I made a cerrosafe cast of the chamber and bore and found it quite oversize. The bore is .376 and groove diameter is .383. I could not locate any proper size bullets so I ordered a set of swaging dies fron Corbin and have been shooting paper patched. My rifle has a straight stock with double set trigger. I installed a Marble's tang sight and have a globe front sight ordered. Of the two loads that I've tried ( 3031 and 4759) 4759 at 16.5 grains is shooting very well. My next step is to increase the weight if the bullet. Although the oversize bore has been an obsticle I am please with the rifle. workmanship, while lacking in several places, is quite good overall.

I have to agree on the oversize chamber/well......a generous one anyway compared to my other 38-55's   I fire formed about 40 cases to the chamber and I have now neck sized them but, havn't had a chance to shoot them yet.  My bore seems abit tighter than yours as a .380 seemed to shoot ok with no leading.  My loads were 16.5 of sr4759 and 17.3 grs of imr 4227 with a miester 245gr cast sized .380.  My bore seems tight ahead of the chamber and then opens up in the middle and tight at the muzzzle again.
I'm interested in how you paper patched bullets shoot for you.  Kevin
