Just get a new spur and turn it around so the slot is up/forward and on as far as it will go. This will serve two purposes, first it will get the spur lower on the hammer. Second, the inertia from the hammer strikes wont bend them open and ruin them by cracking/deforming the ears. I learned that with the first one one I has several years ago, after turning them all around I haven't had another problem.
