Ruger No. 1 international
« on: October 24, 2006, 03:30:25 AM »
I was at range and had some .243 loads I wanted to shoot up.  I fired 4 rounds.  1 and 3 touched, 2 and 4 touched; however, the points of impact were an inch apart.  I fired some more and they started printing high.  Made scope adjustment and brought them down.  Never really happy with the grouping.  After being at range with my Savage 6.5x55 shooting a group the size of a dime, I am frustrated.  Nothing runs like a deere, and nothing shoots like a Savage.

I went in the gun shop at the range.  They had two No 1 tore apart awaiting new barrels and work to make them shoot better.  The best both shot were 1 and a quarter at 100.  These guns should do better.  I don't think the barrel is bad since I got the touching groups, just the bedding.

A friend of mine told me my problem had to do with the barrel and floating it with tension on the back screw with float at the muzzle.

Any suggestions?  Obviously the Savage will go with me this year.

The forend hangs on the ejector spring housing. The forward end of that housing is split. Drilling a hole through the split and tapping for a screw, allows you to vary the pressure on the barrel. A lock nut keeps the screw in the same place. Somebody makes a gadget that does that now, it's an old accurizing trick. I think you can find a how to article in an old Rifle Magazine, if the right back issue is still available.  ;)

I know of 4 No 1 that have accuracy problems.  I talked to the gunsmith and showed him an articel.  If he has success with the two he has tore apart, I will try his methods.

Yes, they make a unit like a hicks unit that puts pressure on the barrel.

Hopefully, I can get to an 1" or less at 100.

if you try adjusting the forearm screw it may help.i had a similar thing happen with a #1 270 rsi.i also had to relieve the nut on the front of the foreaem that holds the forearm cap in place it was proud if the wood surface by at about .100".a little dremel work on that and just tightening the screw enough to  make contact with a little lock-tite  i was able to acheive 1/2 groups at 100+ yds, letting the barrel cool between rounds.i have a 30/06 that shoots just as well, never had to touch that one, just found a load it liked.
you may want to try a lighter load/less velocity my, 270 didn't like real hot stuff, and literally it did the same exact thing, would produce two groups out of 4 shots.be sure to clean and cool your barrel between shots, good luck adker.

E. Arthur Brown co. makes the No1. accurizer you can buy and install yourself or get it put on by them.  They also sell new triggers and custom barrels. Take a look.
