Moderate load for .475?
« on: September 10, 2006, 03:38:55 AM »
Hello, folks. I'm looking for a moderate load for my .475. I bought the gun used, an older model 757. I can get it to shoot the Cast Performance 410 gr. bullet pretty well at full throttle, but would like to have something accurate at 1000 fps or so- that's what I bought the revolver for in the first place. I don't hunt polar bears here in Virginia! I've tried the same bullet, as well as the Lee 400 gr., but both are less accurate at reduced speeds. I'm currently using 296 powder, but of course am afraid to reduce the loads past the minimum suggested. Any input would be most appreciated!

Thanks, Regan

Just go get yourself a can of Unique.  I load 10 grains.  Still plenty stout but pleasant to shoot.

Yepsolutely, get a can of Unique and some 420 grain hard cast and work up to around 10 grains to find your most accurate load.  You will be ready for VA for sure.

14.0 of HS-6 with a 410-420 grain cast bullet should give you around 1050 fps.

I just tried some 400 gr. LFN;s with 8 grs. of Unique, first group was 1 1/2" second only a little larger, at 50 yds.  Very pleasant, although they shot about a foot lower than the full power loads.  I think I chronoed these at about 800 to 850, but can't remember.

Friends, I certainly appreciate y'all taking the time to reply. I'd be interested in hearing about other loads if someone has favorites, but I do have some Unique and Universal Clays- I'll give them a try.

Thanks, happy shooting! Regan
