What about these stats?
« on: August 25, 2006, 03:37:42 AM »
I read a lengthy articcle in a local Houston (liberal) news paper about feral hogs.   I am not sure where they came up with these figures, but read these and tell me if you think they are on or  off base.

Average life span, 15 to 25 years.
Two litters per year, as many as 12 piglets per litter
Begin breeding at 6 months of age
In 35 States in the US
Live in nearly all 254 counties of Texas
Average mature feral hog weight, 75 to 150#
Trophey size hog 250-450#
Two million hogs in Texas, nearly 50% of the total US hog population
USDA approved slaughter houses export feral hog meat all across Europe, Italy, and Switzerland.

The article was mostly about Bay or Catch competitions and the laws in Texas and other southern states regarding this and the relation to animal cruelty laws. etc.etc..    They had some good photos though.

Well, I'm no kinda expert, but here's my opinions: Avg lifespan-WAY off base, 12 piglets per litter-I used to work in a modern hog confinment unit; we could get 12 per litter but even under ideal, controlled conditions we could only avg 10 so 12 in the wild may be possible but probly not very common. The rest may or may not be true, except I don't believe the last item for a second

In Florida, I would estimate lifespan about 10 yrs max. I have only seen one litter over 7 (it was 10) and more often or not 4 or less. I did see a big sow in my pasture this morning with a litter of 6. The shoat were about 40 lbs each and she appeared to be pregnant with another litter. I have seen many family groups with what appeared to be 3 generations running together.

Wynn is on to it real good.  The birth rate is directly corresponding to the conditions the hawgs encounter.

I think you guys are correct.  The litter sizes sounded way too high for me for the average feral sow.   I wasn't sure about the life span.  IN my hubnting woods, the life span is much lower if I am on stand...LOL
