.30-30 170 gr Power Points, 60 yards....first shot knocked her down, walked up and she was still breathing so one extra in the back of the head.....she was dead. Surprisingly, she was kinda loping towards me at 30' degree angle, but figured if I did not shoot, she would cut into the swamp hedges in another 10-15 yards where I would not get another opportunity. Hit her in the upper right shoulder area and knocked her right down on her back. She was not that big, 'bout 240#.
Heard tales that the Eskimos use .30-30's on Polar bears, even read an article on it once, just can't remember where. My cousin uses a .30-30 on griz all the time, doesn't understand why people need more. 'Course he bought the levergun from Montgomery Ward way back when for $39.99, hard money back in the mid-60's, except for the two metal straps screwed on the wrist and covered with duct tape (when an Elk fell on him after he shot it), and a home made rear sight epoxied to the front of the receiver, it has worn well. In forty years, he figures that .30-30 has given him 'bout a thousand critters from Antelope to the biggest Moose I ever saw. He laughs at city folk with their upteen zillion dollar, mega magnum whatchmacallit, wiz bang rifles come up the mountain to battle with game at a thousand yards. He had one gent give him a Sako chambered for .338 WinMag with a fancy $1000 scope on it, after he guided him on a successful Black Bear hunt, as a show of appreciation. Gregg says it is probably still laying against the rock up the valley, wouldn't expend the energy to bring it back out of the mountains, the old .30-30 does just fine. It has been probably 10 - 15 years and not to many people alive know the area, so it is just rusting away there.
