Who all has taken a black bear with a 30/30?
« on: April 05, 2007, 10:57:54 AM »
Hey everyone,
It seems that there are two kinds of people out there when it comes to the old 30/30.

Type A People:  A 30/30 will kill anything with an accurate shot.
                      &
Type B People:  A 30/30 doesn't have enough power to cleanly take game.

I have never taken any game with my 30/30.  So I'm hoping that guys that have hunted black bear with a 30/30 could tell me about how effective it was.  I'd like to know about how big the bear was and how far away it was too.  I've never taken a bear or anything else with my 30/30 but I'm thinking about taking it on a bear hunt this August.
I love to hear bear hunting stories in general, but bear hunting with a 30/30 is really what I'm after.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Last year I was in camp with two lads from Missouri, neither of whom had ever hunted bear before.  One of the lads was hunting with a .30-30.  A really nice boar (300+ pounds) came in to his bait but didn't come all the way in.  The bear laid down on the ground about 20 yards away.  The hunter didn't have a clear shot so he waited as long as he could and finally shot the bear in the neck with his .30-30.  When he got down the bear was still alive so he shot him again.  Not pretty but he got himself a very very nice bear.  Can't argue with that!  Rev

I got one with a 30-30. It was 250 lb and I used a 170 gr. round nose bullet. One shot and it dropped.  ;D

The 30-30 has killed more game than any other caliber, in this country anyway. Anywhere from jack rabbits to deer, to elk to black bear to grizzlies and everything in between.  Plenty of gun for a black bear especially if you are baiting.  If your stalking, I would want a gun with a little more range not power.  My brother shot a 400lb bear 2 years ago with a Marlin 30-30 off of bait and it went 60 yards.  I shot one about the same size with an arrow and it went about 40yds.  Another guy shot one with a muzzleloader, and another with an arrow. As long as you make a good hit, which shouldn't be to touch at baiting ranges there will be no problems.  I my opinion there it isn't much of a challenge shooting a black bear off of bait with a rifle.  We are going again this year and my brother will be using a bow.

.30-30 170 gr Power Points, 60 yards....first shot knocked her down, walked up and she was still breathing so one extra in the back of the head.....she was dead. Surprisingly, she was kinda loping towards me at 30' degree angle, but figured if I did not shoot, she would cut into the swamp hedges in another 10-15 yards where I would not get another opportunity. Hit her in the upper right shoulder area and knocked her right down on her back. She was not that big, 'bout 240#.

Heard tales that the Eskimos use .30-30's on Polar bears, even read an article on it once, just can't remember where. My cousin uses a .30-30 on griz all the time, doesn't understand why people need more. 'Course he bought the levergun from Montgomery Ward way back when for $39.99, hard money back in the mid-60's, except for the two metal straps screwed on the wrist and covered with duct tape (when an Elk fell on him after he shot it), and a home made rear sight epoxied to the front of the receiver, it has worn well. In forty years, he figures that .30-30 has given him 'bout a thousand critters from Antelope to the biggest Moose I ever saw. He laughs at city folk with their upteen zillion dollar, mega magnum whatchmacallit, wiz bang rifles come up the mountain to battle with game at a thousand yards. He had one gent give him a Sako chambered for .338 WinMag with a fancy $1000 scope on it, after he guided him on a successful Black Bear hunt, as a show of appreciation. Gregg says it is probably still laying against the rock up the valley, wouldn't expend the energy to bring it back out of the mountains, the old .30-30 does just fine. It has been probably 10 - 15 years and not to many people alive know the area, so it is just rusting away there.

My daughter shot her bear , 203 lbs dressed with a 30-30. One shot, heart shattered, bear went 10 feet. Our guide said he'd be happy to see everyone use a 30-30. Shots on baited bears are anywhere from 25 to 50 yards with a nice rest. Flat shooting isn't a factor where we hunt bears. If you are hunting baited or treed bears and you can't kill em with a 30-30 you need some shooting lessons. Alot of people think they can make up for their poor shooting and hunting skills with a bigger gun, not true.

billy_56081, I don't think people are making up for anything by choosing to use a bigger caliber gun. Some just want something bigger. I have used a 30-30 and 45-70,  I also have used my 500 Mag and 460 mag handguns. It is just personal choice. Never assume that people choosing larger caliber because of poor shooting skills, it is foolish to assume.

I guess I shouldn't assume that people are making up for thier poor skills by choosing a larger caliber. I have used a 308 n 30-06 on bears. I guess most of my opinion come from when I guided in Colorado. I would not feel over gunned with a .375 h&h or under gunned with a 30-30 on black bears. We have had guys in our party actually try to tell others that a 30-30 or other calibers were not enough for bears. Our outfitter set them straight and the guy saying this is the only one who has lost a bear shot by gun. He was using a 340 weatherby, but after that he switched to his rem 11-87 on advice from our guide.

I've read a couple different people saying that the best way to make a bear guide smile is to bring a shotgun.

The guides in Maine like to see people show up with 12 guage shotguns.  They called the guys with shotgun, real bear hunters.  I guess one day I will try my slug gun.  ;)

Noth'n wrong with a slug gun.....builds strong muscles after a day of tote'n it up and down and all around. The're pretty good at get'n hung up in the bush too! Makes for even more exercise. Personally I would rather carry something light, short, and handy like a .30-30 or my current favorite...my .444 Timber Carbine. Then again, I did manage to topple a fairly large Black Bear with a .44Mag from a little Trapper. That being said, I will not do that again. Again, the shotguns not a bad choice, just a bit unwieldy. My cousin says, a short shotgun is the best bear gun around....if'n your fight'n one in your tent.

One of guys at work killed his last moose with his 30-30. It worked just fine. Take a look at the new Hornady LeverRevolution ammo.

I have fired several boxes of the new Hornady Leverolution ammo through my rifle.  That ammo is the largest reason why I quit handloading for my 30/30.  Nothing I could make shot nearly as accurate as the leverolution ammo.  It isn't like my 30/30 is a benchrest rifle because of that ammo, but it's definately sub MOA if I do my part.
