Does anyone know the twist on a CVA "Frontier" rifle, .45 cal?
« on: September 18, 2006, 05:29:46 AM »
I picked one up second hand and was hoping for a conical twist as I shoot maxi-balls in most of my .45s.

Anyone know, offhand?

No, but since you have the rifle check it yourself.

Use a tight patch/jag combo that is oiled & a cleaning rod that has a bearing in the handle so the rod can rotate easily. Patcdh/jag must be tight as to grip the rifling & follow it.

Push the patch/jag to the breech. Take a piece of tape & wrap around the rod right even to the tip of the muzzle, & have the two ends of the tape together so they stick up like a flag at the 12 o/clock position.

Slowly pull the rod out til the flag moves to  3 o/clock.  Measure the distance from the muzzle to the flag.

If it is   6"     it is a 1-24 twist        ( 4 times this measurement = 1 revolution = twist per revolution or 1-24" twist)
If it is 12"     it is a 1-48 twist
If it is 15"     it is a 1-60 twist
If it is 16.5"  it is a 1-66 twist
If it is 17.5   it is a 1-70 twist

If you want to measure at the 6 o/clock position & have a long enough barrel, you can multiply the distance x 2 = rate of twist.

 ;)

I think they are 1-48....
Mine shoots conical or round ball equally well.
It especially likes the Lee R.E.A.L. Bullets of pure lead.
I honestly think mine has the twist stamped somewhere on the barrel?
Not at home to check though.

The only one I've seen was a .50 smoothbore. that would be 0 turns in an infinite barrel.  :D
