need some help!
« on: October 05, 2006, 06:54:48 PM »
I have a cva wolf mag, that I can't get to shoot consitantly. I tried 100gr 777 with power belt 245gr and had key holes and shot gun pattern type groups. yesterday I tried 285gr and 385gr lead conicals. A little better. 1st shot on a clean barrel was six inches high and 8 to 10 inches right or left. It did seem to shoot better after 3 or 4 shots. also I am using remington clean shot 209 primers. any and all help is needed.

Each gun is different and you need to sort out what is going to work best for your paticular gun. There are some basic things that need to be looked at though. If it is a new gun it may just need to be broken in by shooting a few boxes of lead conicals or such. You did not mention if you are using a scope. If so, you need to verify that everything is mounted well and tight. You should also check to see if the action is locking up tight. You didn't mention what range you are shooting at. I would start at 25 to 35 yards and work up a load that shoots tight at that range before moving out further. You may find that your gun likes bullets in a certain weight range, lighter or heavier or needs more or less powder, or a different powder. Again, only your gun will tell you what it likes. The more you shoot the gun the more loads you may find that it likes as it gets broke in, mine was finiky at first but now will shoot almost anything I put in it if the powder is right.

Good luck with it.

It's better to shoot for the sky and come a bit short than to shoot for the ground and hit every time. After all, the ground is just a place to start, the sky's the limit.

I am using a scope. It is tight and secure. I bore sighted the scope with a bore sighter before going to the range. I started out at 50yrds. And once I "thought" I was on the bull, I moved to a 100yrds. Of course I ran out of pellets after 3 shots at a 100. I will be heading to the range this weekend with a fresh supply of bullets and pellets. I will keep in mind what you said. You may be right about the break in. Thanks for the input.

captzapp,

Ditch the 777 pellets, they have never been consistant in anything I have shot them out of. Pyrodex pellets on the other hand have been very consistant. If you want to use 777, get loose powder and you can work up a load that will work. Just remember to reduce loads by 15%, 85 grains 777 FFG is equal to 100 grains 777 pellets. Not only will you save money, you will be able to tailor your load to find what is most accurate.

Don't shoot conicals with pellets, they don't mix well.
