.243 low velocity loads-please help!
« on: October 10, 2006, 04:55:50 AM »
I'd like to use my .243 for small game/plinking at 22lr-22mag velocities. Is it possible, and if so does anybody have any load info for me? Especially with lead or possibly plated bullets to extend my barrel life, unless you got some other good ideas. Thanks!

You should go to the cast bullet section. I've shot a lot of cast pistol bullets, about all I shoot in handguns and shot a lot of cast out of a 22 Hornet years ago. Great way to make cheap ammo. One of these days I'm gonna start on my 30-06.

Paul5388 shoots Blue Dot and 100gr PSPs in his .243, pm him, I'm sure he'll share what he can if he doesn't check in here, he's a low velocity kinda guy. ;)

Thanks Tim!  ::) Of course, since I get my 1st retirement check tomorrow, maybe I am getting to be "low velocity"!

I don't know that a 100 gr bullet will ever be equivalent to a .22 Mag, but they seem to do the job pretty well.  I shoot 18.0 gr of Blue Dot with a Win LP primer at 2.677" OAL and get 1" or less groups at 100 yards.  Nothing special about my Handi, but I do shoot with a synthetic stock and a standard barrel.

Cast bullets may be a little bit of a problem in not being too widely available, or if they are, they are just as expensive as a jacketed bullet.  Some of the bum rap jacketed bullets get for barrel wear may come from trying to squeeze every fps out of the case's capacity.  An 18.0 gr load of Blue Dot is just a little more than 40% of the case capacity of Blue Dot, so it certainly isn't a barn burner.  I don't remember clocking this load, but I think it's around 2000 fps with the 100 gr Rem Core-Lokt, which is about the cheapest bullet you can get for a .243 (the 80 gr is $8.99/100 and the 100 gr is $9.49/100 at Midway.  For $.50/100 more, I use the 100 gr Core-Lokts.)

2000 fps isn't a rainbow trajectory.  When I shot this load at 185 yards, it was pretty well right where I aimed and hits were easy to make.  The very low recoil and low muzzle blast also helps it shoot good.

I don't know that it's just a coyote type load.  I think there's enough to it to make a good deer load (I'm referring to Texas size deer when I say that), especially for the young folks.

I don't know this for sure, but I think the bullet is going to act more like a cast bullet and have much less expansion at the lower velocities.  That is going to increase penetration, but the exit hole will probably by much smaller.  This might be a case where the lighter constructed 80 gr bullets would give better expansion, without being too violent in expanding, i.e. coming apart like a varmint bullet.  Even so, I'm still going to go with the heavier bullet.  ;)

I meant that in an endearing, complimentary way, Paul!!   ;D

The Win 80gr might be an inexpensive alternative to the 80gr Rem PSP that Midway is out of.

Using 18grs of powder, I assume you have to use some type of filler?

The only cast bullets I know of for rifles, you have to cast yourself.

Actually, there are 6mm cast bullets available commercially.  http://www.beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/index.htm is an example from one source (use the left side bar to scroll down to 6mm).

No, I don't use any fillers.  I'm not finding powder position sensitivity, so there really isn't a need for fillers.  Flake powders, like Blue Dot, are easy to ignite and do quite well chasing around loose in the case.  When I shoot off of a bench, the cases come out of a holder where they're standing up, into a chamber that is tilted down (single shot Handi rifle) and finally fired in the horizontal position.  I don't know where the powder is after that much repositioning, but it still works well.  ;D

I think I need to know more about "fillers".  I would like to use smaller bullets, like maybe a 58 gr. v-max. Although I haven't looked at the sight for cast bullets yet.  I'd like to get them going between 1500 and 2000 fps. Can you fellas help me out ;D  Thanks.

Haven't used it yet, all of my data says no fillers, but I've checked out Pufflon, expensive, but looks like it may work very well.

I'd like to get by without fillers if possible, I just heard of the problems of not enuf powder in a case.  BUT I also heard there were certain powders that don't have much of a problem with position/amt. in case.  I just want a load (I'm pretty set on the 58 v-max) going about 1500-2000 fps.  So How bout' a 58 gr load for low velocity? I got plenty of recipie books, but no low velocity loads for varmint bullets.

Try "Seafire"  goes by B17G  on Accurate Reloading forum. Has given me and others good data on reduced loads using BlueDot. Tried them in 243 22-250 and 30-06 all with great results. No fillers needed with BlueDot.
Have gotten down to 10% case capacity with no problems.

Nice guy and ready to share his data.
Hope it helps.

For an inexpensive bullet, try Lock, stock, and Barrel website, http://www.lockstock.com/.  They have a 100 gr btpp for $75/1000.  I have used the bullets with 20gr of BD for several years.

You could cast your own bullets for very reasonable prices. If that interests you, try the Cast Bullet Association websight. Some of their members have shot .243 in competition and done very well.

Basic bullet casting isn't all that difficult or expensive to get into and can certainly add another dimension to your shooting. Good luck!
