Range report-BC 38-55 & 45/70
« on: October 01, 2006, 04:39:58 PM »
After reading all about the H&Rs here I decided to jump into it. Sold some MLs and got a couple of BCs.
New 38-55:
264g. GC lead from a lyman mold sized to .379- w/ 26 g. of Re7- 2 1/2-3" groups at 100 yds. 3 1/2" at 150yds. Need to work on this load and fine tune it some more but not bad for the first time out. I bought some 200g 375 Sierra RN bullets which I loaded up with H322. They shot a nice 8" group at 50 yds. all hit the paper sideways. Under size for the bore, I guess.
New 45/70:
Factory 300g hp tumbled a 40lb. sillouette (sp?) at 150 and 200 yds. w/ moderate + recoil
Cast 340 plain base ( can't recall the charge) w/ Re7 shot very well 3" at 100yds
Cast 405s did the same. Both tolerable recoil.
factory equivalent loads in 405 and 500 produced heavy painfull recoil. All other loads where within or close to "Springfield" data.
The 45/70 can be a very punishing rifle to shoot with heavy loads. I found the triggers on both rifles to be very acceptable.
Most of the 38-55 loads were loaded in 375 Win brass with no ill effects. Cowboy shooters frequently use 375 Win brass for loading the 38-55 because of the scarcity of 38-55 brass. Starline has not come out with theirs yet.
