Hand loads for the 6.5 X 55?
« on: September 06, 2006, 05:05:40 AM »
I just picked up a rifle in 6.5 X 55 and was wondering if anyone would share any reloads, which powders might be best.  Wish I knew more about the rifle.

BB,

You can get some info from the web at Hodgon's site http://www.hodgdon.com/data/rifle/65x55sm.php.

I load for my Swedish Mauser and use Varget. I shoot this gun only at the range (paper shooter only) and since the one I have is almost 100 years old (but still in fine shape) I go with light loads. Actually, my Varget loads are a bit below the published minimum but they shoot well and are accurate out to 300 yards....which is far enough for me.

Good luck loading and shooting.

Dave.

The 6.5x55 does well with the slower powders.  R-22 is one of the most if not the most popular powders for the Swede.

My 6.5x55 is the only rifle I've got R22 to shoot well in. I use 140gr Hornady's but mine is a new Model 70, I would not reccommend my load in your rifle. Your's may well handle it but those split bridge Mannlickers were not all that strong. You are gonna love that thing! I've also fooled around with 129gr Hornadys and H450 with real good results.

Varget has worked well for me with 100gr bullet. For 120 to 140's my three 6.5's all like loads with RL-19 pushing them.

I have a Ruger 77 in 6.5 x 55. With the 120 Nosler, I use 45gr of H4350 and get excellent results.  47/48 RL19 might also work for you. With a 140 Hornady, I use 47 gr of RL22.  Fed 210 primers in all.

I have a reworked '94 Mauser which loves two loads:  I use 44 grs. of IMR 4831 behind a Nosler 140 partition for a flatter shooting load.

I'm guessing your rifle probably has the older 7.5" twist designed to stablize those lean, long 160 gr. round nose bullets.  My Mauser loves those projectiles.  My favorite woods deer load is 43 grs. of H4831 behind Hornady's 160 gr. round nose.  Deadly and very accurate in my rifle.

Both of these loads are mild and perfectly safe in my 1916 vintage '94.

Love those 6.5X55's!

I like Nosler Partitions for hunting. My 6.5x55s really like Reloder 19 powder and 125 grain NPs.. I have also had good success with AA4350 and Remington 140 grain CLs. I use the data in the Nosler #5 and AA #2 manuals..

My '96 is shooting a 140gr Hornady SST over 41gr. of H380 at 2500fps fired by a Win Mag primer with a COL of 3.105.

I screwed up last year, shooting a buck (15 yards) without grunting to pause him. He stepped just as I pulled the trigger. The SST hit about 12"-18" behind the front shoulder, resulting in a classic gut shot. The SST liquefied the internal organs. Messy field dressing, but the Old Swede did her part. As usual, the problem was the nut behind the buttplate.
