What's the experience with this revolver?  Recommendations for best rounds to use for 1. target shooting and 2. as a personal defense?

All I've ever shot in my SP101 is the 110gn JHP Winchester white box from Walmart----shoots to point of aim---easy on the hand and cheap.

I owned one several years ago and traded it. Not that I didn't like it, but I wanted an auto.  That gun is one heck of a well-built machine.  It stands up well to just about any sane load that you care to shoot in it.  I kept mine loaded with 125 gr? hydra-shoks.  The only thing I ever shot with it was a raccoon.  They are a little heavier than some others, but the are solid little guns that will take anything that you can dish out.

various handloads for practice/plinking.  Usually Speer 125 GDs Mag or 135 +p, occasionally Rem. GS 357 I think 130gr?

I just ordered a blue model GP 100 4" barrel 357..............considered the 101 but I have a 6" GP100 that I really love, so I went with the GP100, 4" barrel for easier carry.

That's all I wanted to know! I fell in love about 1:30 pm yesterday afternoon. I went into a gunshop close to where I live. There was a used SP-101 in 357. It's a real nice gun. It's been taken care of and I just want to know is 325.00 a good deal? The shop owner I know pretty well. His shop is where I got my Blackhawk 45 colt. I really need to take that revolver home pretty soon. I would love to reload for that baby! :o ;D ;)

I like my 2.25 inch model especially with Crimson Trace laser grips. I can shoot it pretty accurately with the laser grips - 2 inches at about 15-20 yards if I'm careful. The laser REALLY helped me get more accurate.

I don't see it as a target gun, strictly self defense - but for that reason I try to shoot it regularly.  Its fun with light or medium 38 special loads and a little more punishing with full power 158 gr or 180, 200 factory loads - but still manageable.  Mostly I carry a moderate handload using the 140 gr Rem bullet at about +P 38 levels or a little more, the Win 145 silver tips, or the new Speer 135 gr 38 defense load.  If I think I might have to deal with wild critters (sometimes bears are in our neighborhood) I carry the heavy stuff.

I think you will like the sp101.  As for the round of choice, I use 180 grain Winchester Black Talons.  I want to make sure body armor or not, what I hit stays down.  Great on deer as well.

Have had the 2 1/4" model for years now.  I like it!  Easy to shoot even with the hotter 125's  I'll typically use standard Remington green/yellow box stuff at the range. It's not intened to be a target gun so one hole accuarcy isn't important really.  When I carried it, I'd use the Federal 125gr Hi-Shoks since it did really like them in the nominal defense ranges.
