Got a 500 S&W
« on: October 06, 2006, 01:56:11 PM »
I just got a 500 in the Handi.I bought a box of Hornady's 300 gr. Evolutions. Has anyone ever chronographed these out of 22" barrel,or a load close it the 300 gr.How many FPS do you think I'm picking up in the longer barrel.I want to do a ballistic chart to see what it does at a 100 yds. and out.Thanks,Dave.

The one factory load I have shot and chronograph out of my 500 was a Bullseye 325 GDHP bullet. It averaged 2050fps if memory serves.

I wasn't able to get a 5oogr to shoot good enough for a buddies 500 so he used these on Whitetails last year. He shot two with it and this GDHP load.
His description was it was like you hit them with a 20# sledge hammer. They just went down in a heap both of them balled like a fawn!!
The entrance and exits where about normal. 3/4 in entrance and golf ball exit. Remember this bullet was designed for the 50 A&E. no where near these velocities, the fact that it holds together at such high velocities is kudos to SPEER and this bullet design.

I have about ten diff variations In loads ready for the range this year all around the 500 gr Hornady bullet. I have been able to get over 1700fps with Lil'Gun so far. Accuracy from my gun is about 1.5 and 6" from mu buddies. the 325's shoot about an inch from his gun and 2.5 from mine.

Good luck with your 500!!!
