Col. Cooper passed this afternoon. Here is the note from Ed Head at GUNSITE:

At the request of the family it is my sad duty to report the passing of
our founder, Jeff Cooper. Jeff died peacefully at home this afternoon
while being cared for by his wife Janelle and daughter Lindy.

There will be a private internment at Gunsite by invitation, with a
public memorial service at the Whittington Center at a date to be
announced.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I have read Mr. Cooper for years. His style, realistic view of the world, and insight on the MINDSET needed to win in an all-out fight, have served me well on several occasions spanning a 20 year career in Tactical Law Enforcement (retired). I used his methods, taught them to other officers, and even my Sons. One of my Son's has carried this training to Afganistan, and now Iraq. I believe he is a better fighter for it, and I thank Jeff for the skill he passed to me and I to my Son. As Ty Murry's girlfriend Jewel said of Ty. I say of Jeff Cooper. John Wayne was an actor. Jeff Cooper, really was John Wayne!

I grew up reading Jeff Cooper's articles in Guns & Ammo magazine from the age of 12.  The G&A staff included  such legends as Elmer Keith, Bob Hutton and Jeff Cooper, with contributions from Col. Chas. Askins and others.  In those days Outdoor Life's shooting editor was the great Jack O'Conner.  Warren Page wrote for Field and Stream and Russel Annabell's wonderful work appeared in Sports Afield.  Other writers at the time were Bill Jordan and Col. Townsend Whelen.  Cooper was the last man standing. With his passing, alll are gone.

I met Cooper at a couple of combat shoots sponsored by the South West Combat Pistol League in Southern California as an ambitious youngster with a shiny new Colt Government Model .45 ACP.   I cut a lot of lawns, washed a lot of cars, and raked a lot of leaves to earn the purchase price....a princely $82.50!  (Eat your heart out). 

Cooper steered me and many others in the direction of the 1911 .45 ACP and I never looked back.  I learned to enjoy other handguns, but the  M-1911 .45 ACP is still the king in my book and the techniques I learned from Cooper served me well. In an era of endless gadgets and aftermarket  do-dads, Cooper stressed the importance of individual skill and discipline and keeping it simple.
