Ruger No. 1 in .378 Wby Mag.

Would it be possible to rechamber a .375 H&H No. 1 to .378 Wby Mag?  What all would need to be done?

I'm thinking about this as a future project.

 I can't think of a reason why someone couldn't? The dimensions of the .378 Wthby Mag are slightly larger in every area, so it should be a matter of minor work to ream the chamber, and make it fit. The brass for the Weatherby will be more costly to purchase, since there are fewer sources for this proprietary caliber. You'll gain about 250-300 fps with a 300 gr. bullet in the .378!

I have three boxes of factory ammo out in the garage and need some way to make use of it.  I was thinking of a custom bolt rifle but actions big enough are few and far between.  I am wondering if the recoil of a .378 in a No. 1 would be ruthless?

jared       here is what you need to think the word brutal comes to mind.   put a brake on that gun and mercury recoil reducers as well.  that is what you need to do.

The remaining metal on barrel tenon on the 375H&H is about as thin you want to go.

The 378 Wby woudd make it even thinner, perhaps too thin for the allowable safty margin.

The 378 also has a rebated rim which is not that well received with a stationary ejector.

Besides a 9lbs Ruger#1 would rattle your brain shooting the 378, me thinks? Of course that goes for all the big bruisers.

If you need more power than a 375H&H go for the 416 Rigby or the .458 Lott in Ruger #1.

I am not an expert.  I did happen to see a nice comparison of the .375 H&H to .375 Weatherby, .375 Remington Ultra Mag, and the .378 Weatherby.  It is in Guns & Ammo, September 2004.  I quote Mr. Craig Boddington "The .378 develops well over 100 ft-lbs of recoil-about twice that of the .375 H&H.  And it's a sharper recoil." With 300 grain bullets the velocity gain is almost 400 fps, and at 400 yards it remains 300 fps faster.  "With more than 5700 ft-lbs, the .378 is, of course, on a different plane.  Energywise the Weatherby round is in the class of the .458 Lott and the .500 Nitro Express."

I wonder if the Ruger can take the punishment.  If the Ruger is available in the .458 Lott, perhaps it is strong enough.

Because you actually have the rounds in your garage, I know you can!

I believe the factory ammo sells for $100 per box now.  You could auction it off, I suppose, and get a nice Handi-Rifle?
