Remington 700. Why a recessed muzzle?

My brother has a 700 varmint 26" heavy barrel with a recessed muzzle.  Just wanted to know if Remington normally produced rifles with recessed muzzles.  If I remember correctly, it is recessed approximately 1 1/2 to 2". 

It has been a while since I shot his rifle, but when I did it seemed odd to me that the rifling didn't extend to the muzzle.

Called a counter bore, is usually done when the rifleing is damaged at the muzzel from cleaning, it is very common with the older military rifles.  It does fix things right up.  Larry

I understand that in order to fix a damaged crown, a person would have this done and maintain the apparent barrel length, balance and look of the rifle.  But the rifle I am talking about is a Rem 700 purchased NIB.  I was just wanting to know if Remington normally sends out rifles with counter-bored barrels, i.e. recessed muzzles.  I have never seen one before on a factory new rifle. 

Would it be correct to assume that the muzzle may have been damaged or the crown incorrectly cut to start with and Remington counterbored the muzzle to correct the problem.

BTW, it shoots great. Factory ammo was around 1", but the first handload tried shot very small groups.

Remington's recessed muzzle is cut that way simply to provide a small measure of additional protection to the critical exit point.

It is true that some of the VarmitSpecials had a recessed crown but not as I understand yours to be naerly 2 inches deep. They were less than 1/4 inch and the area of the rifling terminus was flat. The counter bore provided a 'fence' around it to protect a bit from dings but still provide a flat or slightly recessed area for the bullet to exit the muzzle.. If the rifle is truly new it's likely a factory error.. although I really can't see how it could have happened..  Truly recessed crowns are usually found in repairing rifles that were commonly cleaned from the muzzle with the Savage M99 leaping to mind..

I didn't realize that Remington had produced rifles with recessed muzzles. It does make sense.  I was just curious and wanted to know more about why it was done.

Please re-read my post. You stated the recess was on the ordeer of 1 1/2 to 2 inches... The crown on a varmitspecial is less that a 1/4 inch!! No Remington rifle I've ever seen or known of was produced with a crown recessed nearly 2 inches deep!

Sounds like a factory error.   Send it back ASAP.

If a factory error its a huge error also check and be sure your brother didn't buy a used rifle
