Building a Gatling gun

  HI:
Because we've been talking about my gatling gun here I decided to continue here....... that way the new newbies can see what we have covered. nothing worse than trying to remember what thread something was in.
Here (I hope) is the first picture of a 1862 gatling trunion frame

     I started with a 1"X3" with a piece of round stock pressed in and welded on both sides ,then on the back I drilled and reamed the center and the pinholes.Turning it over and installing it on the jig I cut the face and perimeter.

THis is going to be an IMPRESSIVE thread (or two).

While not a mortar nor a cannon, the gattling gun certainly fits within the pre 1899 design restriction we've self-imposed on the scope of this board.

I'm looking forward to following this and seeing the issues you have to confront in the process.  Nice looking copper-top box too!

WHat flavor of metals in the steel parts thus far?

So far the metal used is cold roll steel as I get deeper in to the piece ,I will start useing 4140 and 4150 but for now  it's 1026-519 just good old fashion steel .The parts that were bronze will first be made of steel then copper flashed polished then a brass flash will be put on . To keep it bright I'll have them clear powder coated ;and because of the heat the brass will darken to a bronze color.In this way I'll get the best of both worlds ,safe and strong and correct in appearance.

The Gatling Gun is most assuredly a piece of muzzeloading artillery as it was employed as such. I am looking forward to the project.

I'm really keen to keep an eye on this project, looks like it going to be just as mutch fun looking at it as it's going be for you building it.

The Gatling was a very impressive piece in it's time.

I know of a guy in SA who built one for a movie set which fired blanks, also a very impressive job.
