.500 S&W handi
« on: October 05, 2006, 01:11:43 PM »
I am sure that much of this has been discussed before but I can't find any of it, apparently I am search engine challenged ;D.

I have gotten the hankering for a .500 handi, for what I don't know.  I'm wondering what everyones experinces have been with the gun?  Are they finicky or not with ammo.
Does it come drilled and tapped for a scope?
I will be loading for it, mainly cause I'm poor most of the time but I enjoy it also.  I would love some sources for components, brass, bullets etc etc and load preferences.
We are planing a hog hunt and I may use this if I get it dialed in in time.

There has been a lot discussed about it, but I understand... it is kinda hard to find.

These are just a few. Many debate how much better the 45-70 is, and I personally can't tell you one way or the other, as I do not own eather. Still I say if you are interested and want it, go buy it and try it out. It will keep barrels moving and NEF/H&R making them.
If you aren't happy with it, there are always members here that you can sale or trade it to, in the NEF/H&R Classifieds. I say go for it.  ;D

EDIT: and as for brass and bullets here ya go:

I have one an REALLY like it!!

I load the 500GR Hornady bullet. I have been able to get more than 1700fps out of the 22" barrel.
I need to work on the load as accuracy in not as good as I feel I can acheive.

So far I have loaded H110, Win 296, LIL Gun. I got the 1700fps out of lil Gun.

Recoil is stout, so I recomend a Simms recoil pad.

Good luck,

Ya I think this project is a go.  I've owned a bunch of .45-70's over the years from Trapdoors to Rugers and everything in between, this will be something new to play with.  I was going to buy a Huntsman but I think I will buy this instead and fit a Huntsman barrel later.  As soon as we get back from Disney I'll order one.

I'm thinking the camo stocks from the turkey shotguns would look really great on this. ;D
