NEF Sportster in .22 WMR transfer bar question...
« on: July 28, 2006, 10:47:46 AM »
I bought a brand new Sportster in .22WMR on Tues. and just got the scope mounted this afternoon.  When I went to pull the hammer back to check the clearance it got hung up internally.  When I wiggled it, I heard something rattle.  I turned it upside down and the transfer bar
for the hammer/firing pin fell out! :(  Anybody else have this happen?

The gunsmith at Gander Mt. where I bought it, will look at it in the morning...I hope this won't involve shipping back to NEF as I haven't even fired a round through it yet...

Thanks!
Plainsman :)

You mean the transfer bar, I hope!! It's been a problem recently with new Sportsters and Handis, you can fix it yourself if you're inclined to, the link below shows R&R of the trigger/hammer group. Several members at GBO have had the problem, most sent the rifles back to NEF for repair on NEF's dime. Some had the parts sent to them free from NEF and they installed themselves, it's up to you. The smith may be able to fix it, but most of those that had the problem out of the box needed parts replaced.

If you do send it in for repair, I would ask them to do a free trigger job on it while it's there, if it needs it.

Thanks for the quick reply!

What should I ask them to do for the 'free trigger job'?

Also, since it sounds like it will have to be sent in, can I send the action/stock only, or does the barrel have to go too?

I'm also debating having them fit a second barrel now too since they'll have it.  They only cost about $80 don't they?  It would be a 'cheap' way for me to get into a .17Mach2! LOL!

It's kind of a toss up on the accessory barrels, a complete rifle in 17M2 or 17Hmr sells for $130 here and at Walmart, the bull barrels cost $90 including shipping and fitting plus shipping to them if you have to pay it, which in this case may not be the case in your situation, they should offer to send a call tag or reimburse you for shipping.

I would call them Monday and make those arrangements if your smith doesn't fix it. Then call them while it's there and order the extra barrel if you decide to and ask for the trigger job then.

Normally you would put the trigger job request on the barrel order form. They don't show the 17M2 barrel on the web page, but it's available, several barrels are missing as a matter of fact.

When ordering accessory barrels, they only want the frame and stock w/forend, the barrel isn't sent, but in your case, they may wany it so they can test fire it, dunno, they'll tell you what to send, you might ask about an accessory barrel, dunno how they deal with the shipping if you want a barrel or 2 up front.

Their toll free number is in the centerfire FAQ and Help sticky.

Be sure to give us a blow by blow account of how this works out for ya. ;)

Gander Mountain and NEF...
« Reply #4 on: August 04, 2006, 09:56:51 AM »
I took the rifle back to Gander Mountain last Sat and the gunsmith looked at it and said, "We'll have to ship it back."

They were very pleasant and helpful, he removed the barrel and only kept the action and stock to send back.  He said to give it about 4 weeks...That'll be tough, buy a new rifle, get it together, then have to wait four+ weeks to get it together again to shoot it for the first time!

I also asked for the 'free trigger job' but decided to wait on getting another barrel.  I'll spend the $80 on ammo! LOL! :)

Plainsman:

I'm different.

I'd insisted they cancel the sale, or swap another gun on the spot.  OR NEF, BBB and Ganders HQ would be catching hell about it, PDQ.

Any major purchase has a three day return privilage built into federal lemon laws.  I'd bet this would qualify.

I sure wouldn't get myself stuck in such a situation of having to wait a month on repairs to a brand new rifle.  They've had enough problems with these things by now to have a replacement arrangement worked out.

Wish you well,

It might if there were such a thing, I wish that were true George, but in truth it's just a myth, there's no proof that it exists that I've ever found. Some car dealers offer a 3 day return policy, but lemon laws themselves apply to vehicles and differ by state. If you have a source for a 3 day return law that is universal, please point me to it.

Thx,

Tim

IF nothing else, it would come down to customer satisfaction or I wouldn't be back there.
Doubt Gander would care much, but, I'd bet if enough hell was raised right away and not a week later there'd be some p/r take place.
Car's or not.

The rifle was taken care of well within the timeline they gave me! :)  Then when I took the rifle to the range, the SCOPE was all screwed up! So much for buying 'clearanced' scopes!  I figure it was actually sold and returned prior to being 'clearanced.'  There was NO adjustment vertically with the crosshairs and the AO turned like it was rubbing on sandpaper.  So I returned the Burris scope with no hassles and ended up buying a Bushnell 3-9x at Sportsmans Warehouse just to get glass on the rifle.

I made it to the range for some ammo testing and sight-in.  It's an awesome setup! :)  Unfortunately, it seems to like Winchester SUPREME ammo the best, which is of course, the most expensive .22 Mag ammo in town! LOL!

If it likes the Winchester Supreme best (mine does also!!) a;so try the silver box Winchester, it's a little cheaper . I have also found mine likes thr Federal 50 grain .22 Mag ammo (Game Shock?) and also shoots the CCI Maxi Mag very well, it was my guns first good load before I tried the Winchester. The Federal 50 Grain just might be the best .22 Mag coyote pill put out by the major ammo manufacturers....<><.... :)
