Replacement rear sight
« on: March 21, 2007, 07:51:08 PM »
What would be the best rear sight to put on a S&W revolver to shoot Hunter's pistol?  I am going to recut my front sight to an undercut partridge.

Thanks,

Craig

If it is one of the 586 or 686 with 8 3/8 barrels with removable front blade I would recommend the Bo-mar set.

Modifying a front sight would not be allowed under the production gun rule.
Hope this helps

S&W sells some really nice patridge sights with a flat top, square notch rears.

I don't know if the package is still available or not, but years ago I had S&W install their silhouette sight package on my 41 magnum.  It consisted of a Bo-Mar rear & a S&W patridge front.  You might contact them to see if they still have that option package.

I just installed the Bomar set on my S&W 627. It presents a fine and crisp sight picture with the high wide rear blade and the undercut partridge front sight which drops right in the interchangable slot. Standard rear notch size is .080 which would be too narrow for a 4" to 6" brl. I ordered mine in a .110 wide notch which to me is perfect for my 5" brl. The .080 might be ok in a 8" or longer brl?  On shorter ones there would be no visible light between the front post and the rear notch just solid black. The Bomar package is not cheap at $135 but fits perfectly and is very high quality.

PATRIDGE, named for Col. E.E. Patridge, who designed it. A partridge is a bird. Sits in a pear tree, like the song says.

I do not believe that Bo-Mar is currently in business.  However, I understand that three different companies are considering bringing out a Bo-Mar style sight system.
