Modify an existing LBT mould
« on: October 20, 2006, 06:19:23 PM »
Veral,

I just purchased a used LBT mould from Ebay. It's a .460 520 grn LFN Plain Base. Is it possible to modify this to a Gas Check design? FWIW, I can't imagine how but I figure I have nothing to lose by asking.

For practical purposes, no.  The only way is to remove the rear driving band, by shortening the mold that much, then indicating the mold true in the lathe and boring a check shank where the lube groove leaves enough metal, ----- maybe.  Very time consuming, which means it is wiser to just buy a new mold.

Home made checks can be fitted over the last driving band and give excellent results.  There used to be a 'free check' maker available, but I don't know if anyone is making them any more.  It uses aluminum beverage can material, and is a tedious hand operation, but the checks are exactly what the name implies.

I'm strongly considering producing a tool of my own design to make checks.  Mine would be used in a reloading press and will knock them out quite fast.  The material to use being the new 24 oz beer cans, which are considerable thicker then the smaller cans.  Please see the accompaning post, which is a poll to learn if there is sufficient interest to make them.

I should have figured as much. Oh well. I do need the larger mould as is any way. A buddy has an original TD and it's bore is on the large size.
