fingers or release
« on: September 07, 2006, 04:06:42 PM »
I just started shooting my bow after several years and I am struggling with consistancy.  I am shooting with three fingers instead of a release.  I prefer to keep things simple, so I shoot my old bow with a long axle to axle length, and use my fingers.  I am thinking about a release. what are the pros and cons to both fingers and release?

I use a release b/c I've got a short ATA bow. The pros of using a release are that you get extremely consistent string release each time, there's less torque and "string-roll", and it's a little easier to pull high-poundage bows. Cons (as far as I'm concerned) are that it's one more thing to keep up with and make sure it's correctly attached to the string/d-loop. Also, I always liked being able to "feel" things out, to have flesh on the bow-string. The largest downside to fingers (if you want to call it a downside) I guess is that you have to practice harder and longer to maintain good form and consistent release, and of course you have to find a consistent style to release in the first place.

However, as much as I like shooting fingers, my bow is so short that it hurst like crap and my shots are real inconsistent b/c it is not very forgiving, so I went release. My next compound will be a long ATA, like 45" so I can shoot fingers. I don't know exactly what a good ATA cutoff point would be to consider switching to release, maybe 38-40". I can shoot my dad's 40" with fingers relatively well (better than my own bow anyway, which is 33").
You only take one shot at a time, so don't waste it :cb2:

I use a release for the consistency as was just said. I also use it on a string loop to keep down the wear on my string. Maybe a tab would work better for you, one with a spacer in between the fingers. Just a thought.

Advantages

You can never forget your fingers at home
Faster engagement time
No need for special attachment points
simple to use (muscle memory)
more "feel"

Disadvantages

tend to get a bit stiff at subzero

Somebody metioned string twist but if you are getting significant string twist something is not set up correctly.

A longer bow  is better for finger shooters for 2 reasons
1) less finger pinch
2) for forgiving
Just another worthless opinion!!

I use to shoot with fingers, but I am more consistent with a release. I would never consider going back to finger shooting.

Seems like if your adjustable draw weight is set high,  that it is easier to draw smoothly with a release that wraps around your wrist than with cold fingers holding on to the string.  I shot with fingers in competition on a recurve years back but prefer a release with the compound for hunting now.

Shooting a release is way more consistant and comfortable to shoot and you can usually hold longer.  BUT as I found out, it is good practice to learn to shoot your bow w/ fingers in case of emergency. ie, you forget or lose your release on the way to your stand.  You will have a different anchor, so its good to have some confidence in your fingers if needed.

I shoot fingers, started with in the 60's, don't plan to change...I like the feel of the string between my fingers...When my groups open up it is usually due to lack of concentration...Try holding your form until you see the arrow hitting the target it should look like it hits right where the pin is...Also....relax...I see too many shooters (gun included) that try to bear down too hard on their weapon...

Release, because I don't have to work so hard to be a good shot. Takes one variable out of the equation.

If you get a release, try to find one without the velcro wrist strap. I've found that the velcro ones usually have some velcro exposed when you strap it on and this can catch (and cause noise) on hunting clothes, depending on the fabric. I have a "silent finish" on my camo, kind of a fuzzy exterior. The velcro sticks to this and it is annoying. I'll be getting a buckle release.
