Morgan's raiders

Morgan's monument is just a few miles from my home and I saw in the newspaper that the SCV held an event there recently.  I only learned after the fact or I would have gone down.  Morgan is a fascinating story.  They were some brave guys no matter which side your ancestors fought on.

Nice to see a post that is actually about the Civil War. I had never heard of Morgan's Raiders. I did  a quick internet search, and found this site that gives a brief rendition:

I once had a book on the raid, but loaned it to a reporter when we did a film on the raid for a local TV station.  I never got it back.

After his capture, Morgan actually escaped.  I believe there is a museum for him, I think in Bowling Green, KY, or is it Lexington?

Thanks for the tips, you guys!

Apparently, Morgan's 1863 raid across the Ohio River generated the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil, a fact of which I was previously unaware. A bit about the Indiana portion of the raid can be found here:

http://www.in.gov/iwm/pdfs/indianaincivilwar.pdf

Seems he cause a tidge more mayhem for Hoosiers than for Buckeyes. I'll have to mosey on down to Corydon and see if I can find any historical markers in the area.

In the summer of 1862, a year before the Ohio raid, Morgan, along with Forrest, was instrumental in disorganizing supply routes and tying up Union forces in KY & TN.

I understand that the Hoosier general who was chasing Morgan also wrote Ben Hur.

That General would be Lew Wallace , who did write Ben Hur after the war . Early in the war he did have some sucess , especially at Fort Donnelson in February 1862 . But after being made the scapegoat for Grant's mistakes at Shiloh , he was sent home from the field to wait for orders that would of probably never come if not for the movements of Bragg , Kirby Smith and Morgan .
The raid by Morgan rivals Gettysburg as the farthest northern penetration of the Union by Confederate Forces and the raid covered 1,000 miles by it's end . The war in the west did not get as much attention then or now .

Star1Pup,

The museum is the John Hunt Morgan home in Lexington, Kentucky.  It is located just east of the Transylvania University Campus in down town Lexington.  If you chose to visit, also check out the museum at Transylvania University and the Mary Todd Lincoln Home.  All three are within a 5 block area.  The medical section of the Transylvania Museum is very interesting.  Many Civil War doctors received their training at Transy.

Also close are the Henry Clay home, White Hall and Whitehaven, a KY State Park that was the home of one of Clay's nephews.

The Kentucky State Armory is in Frankfort, KY.  It is about 50 miles west of Lexington.  The Armory has a large collection of Civil War Era weapons and accoutrements.
