asking for build advice
« on: October 27, 2006, 05:11:50 PM »
I have a piece of 2 1/4 ID 3 1/2 OD seamless tubing 36" long. I have made a breechplug for a press fit and have barely cleaned up a section of the OD  for a snug fit inside a sleeve which will make the breech 4" dia. The remaining part of the o.d. was turned down .1 just enough to clean up good . So what do you guys think?

How long is the breech plug?  The sleeve?  What do you intend to use as shot?

I'd like to see the sleeve more like 5" in diameter.

Remember the safty rules from N-SSA and AA call for the diameter over the breech to be at least one caliber in all directions. So minimum standards call for the diameter of your breech to be  6 3/4 inches.  This includes the length of the Breech plug.

the breech plug is 1.5" long and has a step 1" long x 1.25" dia. so I can get a good weld in there. As far as shot goes I was thinking about the 2# lead ball mould. The sleeve I was planning to use is hydraulic cylinder tubing and is 4.125 dia. but maybe ill rethink the sleeve thing thats why I asked you guys. I have built several cannon and mortar but this will be my largest and I thought I needed some experienced advice.  Thanks

You need to rethink your breech plug also, or at least how you are going to get the thickness you need?

You might also rethink using lead for a projectile that large. A lead ball that big will weigh 2 1/4 to  2 1/2 pounds.   You are going to need to really load down to avoid excess pressure.

Do you have a copy of THE MORE COMPLETE CANNONEER  By M.C. Switlik with selected excerpts from other artillery manuals? You will find some helpful information in building your gun in the book.

The remaining part of the o.d. was turned down .1 just enough to clean up good.

Meaning the 3.5" diameter is now 3.4"?

I, too, think your breech plug should be longer, like 2.5" or so.  In fact, I prefer screw in plugs so they can be removed and fouling cleaned out of the joint between the tube and plug.

You could have multiple sleeves like the Brookes.

I can see how every one misunderstood me on my breech plug length I made myself clear as mud. The plug is 1.5 + step1.0 so total 2.5 . Since Last I was on the forum I have been thinking about multiupile sleeves .

The 2.25 material I have appears to be the same as John n's  in the "2 1/4 smoothbore pix" thread.

One thing you could do is make your breech plug a couple of inches longer and chamber it.  That would lessen the breech diameter requirement.

Hey Gaskil could you give me an estimate on the size powder chamber you would make?

I would go with about 1" dia and 1.75" depth.  You could go up to 1.5" dia but not much point in shooting beyond your ability to see the shot hit.

A powder chamber isn't a bad idea.  But something to consider is how are you going to get teh powder into the chamber?

You might want to consider a Gomer style chamber.  This is a cone shaped chamber the mouth of which is the same diameter as the bore but smaller at the bottom. To see and example of this chamber do a search of "Chamber" in The Artillerist Manual Or just go to PDF page 49.
