Buff Classic 45/70 sighting in under 100 yrds.
« on: October 06, 2006, 12:09:48 PM »
O.K. i`ve got the Smith ladder sight and the higher front sight. When I bore sighted it for 100yrds it look like it will shoot high. The rear sight won`t go any lower and the front sight won`t go any higher. Am I to assume I can`t sight it in uder say 150 yrds ?

A bullet's trajectory doesn't fly straight on line of sight, they start dropping as soon as they leave the muzzle, you'll need to bore sight to above the 100yd POA to hit the POA, or just bore sight at a closer range and work your way out when you start shooting.

Quickdtoo is correct. If you think about it, bore sighting is a straigh-line plane. However, if you were to drop a bullet from your hand at muzzle height, and to fire one exactly parrallel to the ground at the same time, they'd hit the ground at exactly the same time. It still falls. So even hitting POA at 100 yds. requires aiming a little higher than bore-sighted POA in order to get the trajectory right.
You only take one shot at a time, so don't waste it :cb2:

What kind of groups are you getting with that gun? What load are you using? My son is considering buying one, and we are curious as to the accuracy.

LRB, welcome to GBO!! Check out the NEF/H&R Centerfire forum, lots of BC owners there including me, I have 2 of them and 2 .45-70 Handis, very accurate and one of the most fun calibers.

Thanks quickdtoo, I will check over there, but how tight do yours shoot. I am having a lot of problems getting a NE .243 to shoot under two inches.

If yours is the Superlight, they can be real tempermental, but any of the .243 barrels can be very accurate with the right ammo, my .243 Ultra shoots the 100gr Federal Hi-Shok and Power-Shoks inside an inch regularly, it also shoots the Federal Fusion 95gr very well too.

Hope to see you on the NEF/H&R Forum, lots of .243 shooters there, too.!! ;)

Get it on paper at 25 to 50 yards, adjust windage.  If low raise rear sight and try again.  Now go out to 100tds aand check windage and elevation, correct as you go.  The elevation markings may only be useful for reference depending on your load.  The Buf Classic I have is very accurate.  I am getting 2 to 2-1/2 inch groups at 200 yards with a Smith rear sight and a load of 28grs. acc. 5744 with a 350gr. berry plated bullet, Fed. 210m primer.
