17 HMR and 17 HM2

Good Morning!

After attempting to shoot my HW97 air rifle 100 yards, I've decided a 17 HMR or HM2 might be a better bet for longer range plinking and target shooting.

What I have in mind, as far as rifles I've found that I like are the following:

Savage 93R17-BVSS
Marlin 917VSF
Remington 504, 504T

and in HM2,

Marlin 917M2S

I've heard numerous opinions on the Savages and Marlins and people seem to like them, with just a few complaints about them. Most of the complaints I've seen about the marlin are crooked scope holes. I have never read about peoples opinions on the Remington 504 rifles.

I'm considering the HM2 because of the cost of ammo. They seem to be around $3 cheaper for a box of 50. What could I expect performance wise from them? How do they compare to the HMR?

What other 17 HMRs and HM2s are out there that I should be considering? I also have been unable to find real prices on the rifles mentioned above.

Welcome to GBO!! I would recommend looking at the CZ 452 or 453 in 17M2, very nice bolt rifles and extremely accurate with their hammer forged barrels and mini mauser actions, much nicer than Savage or Marlin, but cost more too. CDNN had the 452 recently for $240, IIRC. I have a 452 American in 17hmr, added an AS adjustable sear and I'm a happy camper, but many just use a $15 Brookie kit and they're good to go. There are threads on CZ rimfires here, but there's lots at RFC in the CZ forum or the 17M2 forum, as well as the models you've mentioned.

I have the Savage in 17HMR and I like it fine.  I added a Rifle Basix trigger and built up the cheekpiece so I get a good cheek weld witht he scope I put on it and it works great.   I also have a G2 Contender and have HMR and Mach 2 barrels for it.  I like that even better.  I also have a 14 inch Contender pistol barrel that is boringly accurate as well.  The Contender gives a lot of ability to change things out.  The down side is that it is a single shot, but that keeps me from wasting ammo.

I've never heard of CZ guns before now. I will seriously consider them... But looking at the dealer list for New York, there aren't any very close to where I am. They are all 2 hours or more away.

It seems like I just went through this very long process of finding the right gun looking for an air rifle! Time to do it all over again.

  I have to agree with Quiclk...
  The Marlin & Savage both offer good dollar value rifles, but the CZ is just a cut above (IMHO) since I own all three brands.
  The CZ costs a bit more..but if you decide to add special triggers etc..you're pretty close..

  All that being said, my Marlin 880SQ and my CZ Special shoot very comparably..although the CZ looks, feels and handles like more $$$.

  As far as HRM and HM2 depends if you want to go larger than squirrels and farther than 100 yds.

   Ck with Rimfire central forums also..IMHO you will find that the Ruger bolts and Rem 504 both vary considerably gun-to-gun for accuracy.
    
  If single shot is adequate..don't sell the little NEFs short..I have a Sportster in bull barrelled .17 HMR , and it doesn't take a back seat to the others...especially when you can come by here and get great "tuning advice" from guys like Quickdtoo, Fred and 1100...

I would go with the 17hmr.
I don't think that it will matter for plinking
but there seem to bee a lot more people
buying guns chambered for it.
If they stop making a rimfire cartridge (17m2)  in ten years
you have a junk rifle.
Didn't there used to be a 6mm rimfire.

Yes, the CZ is a nice rifle and worth the money. But I had a budget and decided on the Savage in 17HMR and have been very happy. You will be suprised by the accurracy of the 17HMR.

I would pretty much have to agree with this statement.  It all depends on what you want the rifle to do.  I also agree with the info about CZ.  I have a CZ in 22 lr and love it.

I also have the 17 HMR and the 17 M2.  I have the Savage in 17 Hmr and my son-in-law has the Marlin 17 HMR.  I don't think there is much accuracy difference between the two, although I have always preferred Savage.

If money isn't a problem I would definitely get a CZ before a Marlin or Savage.  Keep in mind the 17 HMR can do things the 17 M2 can't.  And if you buy your ammo from Walmart I don't think the cost of ammo is that great of a difference.  Although if you shoot a lot it could add up quickly.

It was A 5mm Remington Magnum, Not a 6mm.
That was an excellent cartridge that probably would have caught on better
if Remington would have put a bit more money into advertising.
Plus, there was no Internet forums to read reviews of it.
It was a truely new cartridge, not a .22 magnum necked down.
it was fatter at the base.. There is a Centerfire conversion for those old .5mm's now.
I agree about the .17's dying out in a few year and ammo going away though.
I have a good supply being laid back for that day, Just in case.
