Marlin 1894 Cowboy: 24 inch oct/.357. Comments please?
« on: January 17, 2006, 07:42:29 AM »
I have been thinking about getting one of these just for the fun of it.  I will probably only use it for long range shooting (100 yrds).  Based on the current Marlin catalogue, I am not sure that Marlin is making these anymore???

Does anyone have any experience with this model, and can you let me know what you liked or disliked about it?

Thanks, Big Paulie

I have the 18 1/2" .357 Marlin.  Fun little gun.  At 100 yds there won't be too much energy to do much damage but for plinking it is great.

I have one and it is a "peach".  I really like the longer sight radius.  It is a keeper as well as they are not makeing the 24" in either .357  or .44 Rem Mag from what I have been told.  Mine has had an action job which makes it even more fun and useful in CAS competition.

I really like the Marlin lever action 1894's with octogon barrels...  We have one each in 32 H&R mag., 38 special, and in 45LC....  Really enjoy shooting these rifles....  never had a problem over the last 4 years or so....

I've got the 1894 Marlin in .357/.38. It's the Cowboy with the octagon 24" barrel. I've shot it in CAS for four years now and have many thousands of rounds through it. I love the gun. Reliable as a brick, and accurate.

You are right, in that Marlin has ceased production of this gun in the 24" barrel. They produce it now only with a 20" barrel. I like the slightly longer barrel, so I guess I oughta be looking for a backup gun, just in case!

You'll just have to go 2 years into the past and get yourself a 1892 24" .357!

.357 is a fun gun if you want more knock down power than a .22. Cheap to shoot and a dead eye at 100 yards. Besides it's a great rifle to pair up with a .357 pistol. Actualy my rifle is a Winchester I got 4 years ago. And with my .375 SS Black Hawk in a full western quick draw holster set up makes a great package. 20 years ago I had the Marlin and loved it.
