Where can I start?
« on: October 26, 2006, 04:19:09 PM »
I have recently received my 22-243 winchester, not the middlestead version just a straight 22-243, built on a Mauser 98 action.  I have 1 in 9 twist barrel and want to shoot the Hornady 75 grain A-max.  I have found a little bit of loading information on the web and got a little loading info from the gunsmith that built the gun, however I would like to try some other powders.  The little bit of info that I have found seems to be almost identical info for the same powders as a 243 with 100 grain bullets.  My question is, since this is the parent cartridge, am I safe to start at the starting loads and work up with other powders that are shown foir a 243 with 100 grain bullets.  I am new to wildcat reloading and I am not sure if the is a safe place to start.  It seems to me that as long as I start low and work up this would be fine.  Any help wouold be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Like you I had the same problem when I started with my 6.5x06. I don't recall how I figured it out but I did a lot of case comparing. With the 22-243 I'd take a long look at the 5.6x57 in the new Hornady book. My guess is that you might be able to use the starting loads and work up ONE round at a time looking for max pressure. Compare the 243 and the 6mm Rem with the same bullets. The 5.6x57 is about the same case as the 6mm Rem. I believe that I read where the 5.6x57 cases are fairly heavy so their bottom loads just may be the ticket. There is a reloading site and I don't recall the name that has loads for about everything. Ricall.............. I think he's on this site come to think of it. He'll show up if he is.

I posted this on stevespages already and no replies from Steve yet.  His reloading data only shows up to a 70 grain bullet with a 22-243 middlestead.  Thanks though.

http://www.reloadersnest.com/detail.asp?CaliberID=100&LoadID=1147

That might help, but they've got it listed as a super high velocity load. Maybe you can find something related on that site.
