4-wheeler wreck
« on: October 18, 2006, 04:05:52 PM »
I was riding my 4wheeler today around a not so steep bank. There was a stump hidden in the tall grass. When the front wheel went up on the stump everything took a roll. This fat boy (275lbs.) did some rolling and crawling to get out of the way. Not hurt, no damage. I did have a 204 Handi on the 4-wheeler. When it turned over it poked about six inches of the barrel in the ground. The rest of the evening was spent cleaning the mud out of the barrel...Not so much fun...

The moral of the story is watch, out for stumps in tall grass and be sure to clean your barrel...

Glad you weren't hurt, that could have had a real unhappy outcome!!

On a lighter note, that reminds me when I was a kid, me and my best friend drove his dad's '38 Int'l  P/U around on his 25 acres farm for fun, he was driving down an old road that had tall grass and smacked right dead center into a stump that we didn't know was there, fortunately we were only going about 15-20mph, put a nice dent in the front bumper and scared the crap out of us, but the worst was to come when his dad found out, Dave got a wood shed whipping that night!! :o

Compressed air works great to clear a bore, that way you're not grinding anything harsh into the bore with a rod. ;)

Sorry to hear about your spill Ken. I have had many in the dirt, be it Mountainbikes, ATV's, or Dirtbikes. In the end I have to say, for me, 3 wheelers were a bad idea :-X
Nothing more cringing to me as seeing a rifle stuck in the ground barrel first, like a spear or arrow.
Hope all is well, be it health and firearm.

Very glad to hear you made it through with just a dirty rifle (hopefully).

Glad you're Ok and hope the rifle is too.

That also reminds me of when I was about 10 we had some sledding trails down a very long steep hillside in Ohio.  Right at the bottom, when you were REALLY zipping along, the trail forked.  It was the old wood top sleds with the steel rail and the wood handle that you steered with, anyway, my first 4 or 5 runs I took the left trail, but noticed the right trail looked smoother.

Run 6 I took the right trail and found a stump sticking just high enough to grab the sled.  So YES I know EXACTLY how you felt.  I think I landed about 8-10 feet from the sled.  Boy was that an eye opener

Two years ago a trapping friend and I were out breaking trails to later put out some traps when the season opened.  That year someone had cut down a big birch tree that the trail had hooked around in the past.  Not realising the tree was missing at first, my friend hit the stump dead center.  Since we were breaking trail in fresh powder we were going faster than usual, and were up with one knee on the seat for better balance.  Drove the front bumper back into the tub, but my friend went right over the handle bars, taking the windshield off as he went over.  We hung a marker on a tree beside it as a warning, but after each fresh snow we would see where someone else had found it. (Hunting parties like to follow our trapping trails, a good way to see a lot of game that is used to seeing snowmachines and usually don't get excited when one comes by).

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I am pretty sore today in several places. I think the 4-wheeler and the rifle got the best of the deal. I am not as young (54)as I used to be and 275 pounds hits the ground pretty hard. If the Honda 450 had landed on top things could have been different. I just have to thank the one up above for watching over me.....

I had a similar experience this year,  rolled down a mountain about 350-400 feet, broke one rifle stock in half and snapped a brand new luepold VxII 3-9 in half,  ended up costing me several hundred bucks to fix everything,   nocked me out too,  had a headache for over a week from that one.

I tried to get my buddies to carry me out, but they said I was too big, 6'2" and 300lbs,  and the only way they would do it was if they quartered me first.  So I had to ride the darn machine back out the 20 miles to the trucks.  Everyone is always worried about bears but its the ATVs that are more likely to get you.

I've had three ATV's over the past 20 years. Wheelied over the 1st one on a hill due to improper tire inflation (over inflated) and giving it too much gas.

I'm pretty certain manf. stopped making the 3 wheelers due to injuries and lawsuits. Remember when they were constantly in the news?

I will say the 6 wheeler (Polaris) was stable on hill inclines. The chain drive on them lets the tires and suspension hug the terrain instead of losing contact with one wheel as the shaft drive ATV's do. Plus Polaris had a tracker system on the 6x6 which gave tremendous ground contact and made it even more stable on inclines.

Attached photo shows me hauling out my ice shelter. It was able to go places my other ATV's could not. It just felt so much safer. I noticed it right away after the trade in.

Sigh....

This lake usually has a plowed road out to the village but the plows had to give it up one year. I climbed over their barracade without a hint of feeling tippy (this is my 2nd load out). The trail behind me is mine and the boys had to use it to walk out.

Anyway I do feel a 6 wheeler is alot more stable than a 4 wheeler which is alot more stable than a 3 wheeler. And I am going back to the 6 wheeler for that reason with the next trade in.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident...Hopefully you'll be back to normal soon...I've always been a little leary on using them...even though they make short work on getting in and out on a long haul...
