Re-heat treating a knife blade?
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:54:26 AM »
Is it possible to take a carbon steel knife blade, and anneal it.  Could you then take that same steel blade and differentially temper it, ala` Egnath to show a color temper line? I want to do this to a Natchez pattern Solingen blade, just to give it that special something... Thanks, Jeff G

I can't see why it would be a problem.  Here's a thread from the Knife Network that discusses the annealing aspect.http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3488&highlight=annealing. To do the proper HT though, you're going to have to know what the steel is.
