Complete Cleaning of Inline- Your thoughts
« on: October 11, 2006, 12:01:59 PM »
I am curious as to how all of you clean your in lines.  I shoot 777 and I swab between shots then break it down at home, but I generally only use water and maybe some bp solvent.

But I got to thinking about the things that dirty up center fires, namely copper and lead fouling, as well as plastic from the sabots.

What about that?  Should I occaisionally (or routinely) clean with traditional gun cleaning products as well?

Any thoughts appreciated.

smoky,
When I get back from the range, I clean my Omega/Staghorn with #13 or hot water.
But before I store th gun, I always check out the inside of the barrel.  If I were to still see crud,
I'd use other cleaning products, why not?

Prior to storage, I always swab my barrels and other metal surfaces with a thin coat of Break Free...just
to make sure I don't get any rust during storage.

Before I shoot, I'll run aclean patch down the barrel to make sure any residual oil is removed prior to
loading with 777.

I don't know if this answered your question...but it's the way I do it.

I pretty much use the same method as vonfatman, but I use hot water to clean, I have a hose on the utility faucet that just fits in the action so the water only runs thru the bore after tear down and breech plug removal, brush a few strokes, more water, then patch it dry, then run borebutter patches thru the bore while the barrel is still warm. Clean the breech plug and threads out, then use Sabotloader's method of sealing the breech plug with teflon tape at reasembly.

I shoot 120gr of T7, and it really fouls the thread of the breech plug making it hard to remove with any grease that I've ever tried to include BB, gorilla grease, Superlube and permatiex anti-sieze, but using TC breech plug tape makes removal easy as there is no fouling in the threads even after a day at the range. ;)

I use Hornady One Shot cleaner and dry lube on the bolt and trigger group.

I have been using CVA Boreblaster since this August. I spray the boreblaster in the barrell and let it sit for one hour. Then I run clean patches starting from the breech end. It usually takes four to five patches before they come out with no residue. If there is the infamous crud ring, then I will use T/C pre-lubed #13 patches on the bore brush to wipe it clean. This usually takes about two pre-lubed patches. I then wipe all loose breech parts from my T/C Black Diamond with the same pre-lubed patches. Wipe everything clean with q-tips and dry patches, seal breech plug and 209 adapater threads with pink plumbers tape, and run one patch with bore butter and I am done. Lots of different ways to do it.

With 777, all I've felt the need to do is 6-8 hot water patches, 3-4 dry ones, 1 lightly oiled (breakfree CLP) one.

Recently, I was cleaning my WinMag and decided to use the BoreFoam on my Omega.  Boy, that was the easiest cleaning job ever.   Let it sit for an hour, then 3 patches before pulling/cleaning the plug.

I dis-assemble my Omega, and clean everything in hot soapy water. I rinse in boiling water. The water will heat the meatl enough to dry it out completely. After drying, I spray everything with WD-40 and wipe it down. An oiled patch thru the bore, and it's done. Before shooting again, I wipe the bore with alchohol to remove the oil, and shoot one primer before loading. I've never had a misfire.
I am also a big fan of the breech plug tape. I have never found a grease that will work - the plug always sticks.
