Cleaning and lead removal from an old H&G mould?

I just bought an old H&G mould and after scrubbing off some of the layers of grease with CLP and rags,  I found it both the blocks and the sprue plate had quite a bit of leading. What is a safe way to thoroughly clean off all the grease, grime and lead without damaging the mould. Every source I've found cautions against using ANY kind of wire brush. What do I do?

Heat up a pot of lead, immerse the blocks until they heat up, the grease will burn off, the lead will flow off.

Scrub them off with hot water, dish detergent and an old toothbrush. Then, if necessary, heat the blocks carefully until hot enough to melt the lead and wipe it off. You may have to remove the sprue plate.

the heat thing is my first answer too. Soaking then overnight in penetrating oil also works.
