Deer Load
« on: October 15, 2006, 02:46:12 AM »
Is 70g of Pyrodex RS combined with a .50 cal 250 gr spire point Shock Wave a reasonable load in the Huntsman 1:28 for 130 lb white tail deer at 100 yds ?

This combination feels good, gives a nice pattern (3”) at that range. I am not sure it will hit hard enough. I am an old hunter, don’t want the recoil, but will do it if I need to.

I think you would be fine inside 100 yards, certainly 75!

I have never used that light of a load but sounds like it should be fine for 100 yards and in.
Let us know the results
I have a load for my 45 hawken that uses 80 grs and a 240gr conical I feel it should be good for 100yrds..when working up the load the 80grs load just seemed to have that extra ummph over the 70gr load....I have lent it out several times but they have not shot a deer yet maybe this fall.

I would go up to about 85gr. Pyrodex and use the 75gr. load with 777.
