New contender, weak hammer?
« on: July 17, 2006, 11:36:57 AM »
First of all, I am new to t/c's. Just got a new g2 in 6.8 spc and 4 out of 5 rounds failed to fire, I believe due to a weak hammer. The primer seams to have a shallow mark on it. Also, since it's so hard to get ammo, I can't just try another brand. Am i missing somthing easy?

Sounds like excessive headspace to me.  I am not real familiar with the 6.8 cartridge.  What type of case is it?  Rimless?  I will be interested in knowing what finally solves the problem.  Good-luck...BCB

Rimless case based on the old .30 Remington I believe. I agree with the headspace problem.......it is doubtful that a brand new G2 would have a hammer spring to weak to fire. I would call a tech at TC and ask them.

Isn't that the only problem they were having with the .30 remington.

I had the same problem with 300 savage when I started using 308 Win. Brass. Sized too far and left too much headspace.

That sounds like a headspace problem to me also. A crush fit should fix the problem.

Maggot, did you ever figure out what was causing your fail to fire problem?  I, too, purchased a G2 in 6.8, and am having the same problem.  The dealer could not get a complete gun from TC, so they found a frame from one distributor, and the barrel from another.  Would appreciate any response.  Thanks, Joe

I had an after market hammer extension on my Encore 223 heavy barrell and experienced 40% misfires with two different brands (Black Hills and Winchester). I removed the extension and have not had another misfire in three years.

Well for whatever reason a certain Mike Be**m is not welcome on this board. However, his website has an excellent explanation on how to set headspace on Contenders and Encores for rimless cartridges. He even sells a tool that helps in setting your die so its sizes correctly. I have had these problems with rimless cartridges and this cured it. I have also had my Contender fly open due to weak bolt spring and also had misfires on rifle primers due to weak hammer spring. He sells extra strength versions of all these springs and this has solved most of my problems after proper die adjustment.

Sounds like the ammo is not going into the gun all the way OR the locking lugs on the barrel do not match the frame.  How does the gun close?  Easy?  Hard?  Feel much different with or without the ammo in it?  It would be a few minute fix if in my hands.  Hard to explain over the computer.  Check this thread for some old posts on Contender misfires and you will get a lot of info to help you with this.
