pistol barrels into rifle barrels
« on: October 08, 2006, 12:55:06 AM »
By adding a permanant muzzle brake(batf rules apply)and movng the front sight backand adding the front #8-40 screw hole for the rifle hand guard makes some very nice carbines.By law a rifle barrel has to be at least 16" long before you can put a rifle stock on it.We must be good little boys and comply with the law musen`t we!  neptoon

The sight or the forearm aren't a concern, but the muzzle brake (ie: barrel extension) is a concern!
It has to be permanent, welded on, as stated above!

According to the batf silver solder or thredded with a blind pin using a socket set screw is acceptable. The set screw must be flushed out so it can`t be removed.joe

Basically, the extension has got to be difficult to remove!! ;D

Seriously, the easiest way is to have it silver soldered.

Some kinds of adhesive are also used.  It can't be unscrewed and replaced at will.

Neptoon, Wouldn't it be more cost effective to sell the handgun barrel and buy a carbine barrel? Just a thought. Byron

Several years ago I turned down the barrel of a 14 inch 30-30 to .970 for an inch and made a "barrel extension with an I'D' of .968. for a bit more than an inch and used a .312 drill, then a reamer to complete the job on a 4 inch piece of 4130. I took a propane torch and heated the extension till it would go on fully. It has never shown any sign of coming off.

And if you are gonna deal with the length and weight wouldn't the longer barrel/rifling perform better?

it maybe more cost effective, but the common reason for changing a pistol to carbine is for a short rifle barrel.  If you already have a good shooting pistol barrel adding the inch to a 15 inch encore barrel still allows you to use as a pistol but you can legally put the rifle stock on it.  I added a break to my 308 encore barrel now 16 1/4 shoots like a dream.  also foxridge will add their MB to your existing pistol barrel for about 75 or 80 bucks.  it will cost that or more to have a gunsmith professionally (ie properly) cut and recrown your barrel.  lengh doesn't always mean accuracy maybe a few more fps but not accuracy.  Bullberry found that the perfect length for the 17 hmr was 19 inches try to find that in a stock barrel lenghth.  I have the 16" 223 barrel for the contender. it will out shoot the 21" out to 200 yds.  that is my self imposed limit on everything but groundhogs so the 21" usually stays in the safe.
