I'm not seeing any 500 S&W's for sale
« on: October 18, 2006, 06:01:52 AM »
I have not seen many 500's for sale or trade. Not on here or at my normal gun store stops.  Are people buying them and hanging onto them or are they not selling in the first place?.  I want a barrel to fit to my Target Model and have had little luck.  What are your thoughts?

It seems that since Mississippi changed their "primitve weapons" season rules, all of the big bores have been in short supply, sort of a big black hole that sucked all of em out of the system!! Gallery of Guns use to have the .500 and .45-70 in stock regularly, but they haven't for quite some time. If I wanted one, I'd order one at Walmart, then at least you could get on a waiting list as their supplier fills orders on a first come, first served basis.

I wondered about the effect of MS change in law on the supply of big bores. I hadn't been looking for a 45-70 so I hadn't noticed  The bright side is if they ever change it back, the market will be flooded.

Yep called around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and nobody has a 45-70 outside of a few Guide guns and XLR at Cabela's and Bass Pro so put in an order with my local gun shop and told him as long as it takes. His main supplier Sports South was out. This'll be Handi #5 but I won't be playing with it until after deer season anyway.

What "primitive weapon" season rules are you refering to?  Sounds like you are saying they will let you use these for something like muzzleloading season.  Is that right?

Nothing like that around KY

Thanks

Josh

Mississippi added to the list of legal weapons , breach loading single shot rifles that have an exposed hammer and can use smokeless or BP in a metal case .

If you're into a budget scope, check out the Banner 1.5-4.5x32, it gets rave reviews at MO for use on big bore leverguns, everyone that uses it has been impressed. It has 4" of eye relief, as far as I can tell, it's it's as clear as my VX1 Luepy 2-7x, it's surprising that such an inexpensive scope has such great features, it's an amazing optic value.

I have been noticing Walmart list the .500 S&W on their website.  I think my .45-70 has about all the recoil I need.  I've been looking for a .30-30, but I can't find one anywhere.

If the .500 S&W could be rechambered to .50-70 I'd buy one just because.

Thanks quickdtoo for the scope advise.Wal-Mart sell bushnell I might be able to get it even cheaper, but if they don't have that model I'll look for a plan B. They sell Leupold and Nikon, too.I wanted  to find a Leupold 1-4x20,but the 1.5-4.5x32 would work great.I'm going to be using my 500 in thick cover in the swamp behind the house.I should be getting it this week I can't wait for it to get here.Everone says about the recoil.I can't wait to see for myself,Dave.

I saw one on the rack at Bud's Guns in Paris, KY today.  It looked used because the scope tap screws were gone from the barrel.  It had the nicer aluminum based fiber optic sights, just like the one I own.

The best way to find a cheap scope or about anything else is .

www.froogle.com

Last time I looked, I found that scope for about $60.00.

The Optic Zone is a GBO sponsor, it would behoove all of us to buy from GBO sponsors whenever you can, without their support, GBO wouldn't be here for us. $62 is about the best price you'll find on that scope, Jon and Tammy's service is second to none and their prices are hard to beat.

Sounds like a good price, and it helps support the board.  I'm always a little leary of the cheapest source anyway.

I got one from my buddy who bought in on "impulse"!  He wanted $125 for it!  I've got a LEE mold and dies on the way!

I shot factory loads through it when my buddy had it.  I think ten total.  I shot seven of them!  He just complained onthe recoil!  I didn't think it was bad, like a 28ga shotgun.

I wished it had a full length forearm on it for some added weight up front.

Who ever is bidding on that eBay barrel has a major case of the DA.  I bought an entire rifle with scope last week for $175.00 and you can get the barrel from NEF for about 1/2 that.

I noticed that also!  I guess folks on ebay don't look at the flyers MIDWAY and MIDSOUTH send out!  They pay more for used items than we can for new items!

I've been looking at getting one to replace my current pickup gun, a browning lever in .300 WSM.  The 500 S&W handi with a Aimpoint sight would be a good setup, except for the ammo prices....   and a great deer/elk brush gun. I've seen the 500 work wonders on buffalo
H&R handi rifle, Tasco 2.5x10 mil-dot varmint scope w/rings, Haris bipod, Choate varmint stock, Hornady 40 gr. V-max ammo         $600
