Bi-pods on handi's and ultras?
« on: October 23, 2006, 09:44:36 AM »
Just curious if anyone is having success with good tight groups with a bi-pod on an H&R or NEF break open action, since the bi-pod is essentially attached to the barrel.

Some have had sucess with Bi-Pods mounted. Personally mine don't like shooting off them when it mounted to the stud up front. So I mounted them lower on the rifle, closer to the receiver....

It shoots great mounted this way, though it takes a bit to get use to.

Try shooting off them and see how yours likes it, then go from there.

Thats a good one, never tried that.My synthetic stocks shoot great with bipods, but have a woodstocked 22 hornet that never like them.May have to try that closer to receiver on it and see how it does.

Interesting.  You just screwed in another sling screw in thingy so it doesn't touch the barrel?

myarmor did the front stud placement cause the barrel to touch, hence, change the vibration pattern of the bullet traveling down the barrel? How much did it affect accuracy?

Hmmmm...might have to see if group size changes with sandbags versus bipod, and or simply switching back to original synthectic stock.

Attached photo of a Choate stock allows a rail to slide in with bipod and or other accessories such as a light for treed raccoons (one of the few times a light allowed in MN).

My .223 Ultra shoots great from a bi-pod.

Basicly, yeah. Bought an Uncle Mikes pack of swivel studs, and drilled a hole lower on the forearm. The hole is about 1/2" from the bottom of the forearm if I remember correctly...I can always check. I just know my Handis love being shot off the receiver, with forearm pressure on the front throwing shots. So I thought why not at least try it, I am glad I did. There's a thread I started here some where on this...but it's hard to search right now. I'll see if I can pull it up.

myarmor did the front stud placement cause the barrel to touch, hence, change the vibration pattern of the bullet traveling down the barrel? How much did it affect accuracy?

I sanded the barrel channel inside the forearm, so that it wouldn't touch. Plus I have made an O-Ring out of rubber and used JB Weld to secure the forearm spacer for a snug fit and lock up, it worked great for me as shooting it off the front stud opened up my groups by about 3-4" I would say from memory. It irritated me so much that my bro's 223 Ultra would shoot just fine off the front stud, and mine wouldn't for the life of me. So I had to do something...his groundhog count was adding up and mine wasn't 8)

I've choate on all my Handi. I shoot, mostly, with a front bench rest. Time to time I use bipod:

Nef 45-70

Last time I use-it, 50yards, one five shots groups and one 3 shots.

30-30 is also good if not better.
22H is so-so, but I don't work on it too much.
