How do you train a 7 1/2 mo old pup?
« on: October 30, 2006, 04:21:11 PM »
This is Lucy out learning the art of coyote calling. How do you teach her this is not a coyote? LOL Acually, it was hit with a .223 and headed out for the draws. Lots of barking and cat screaming. When they got their the dog had the cat by the throat shakeing it for all she was worth. Pretty sure the cat probably succumbed on its own, but, great experience for a 7 1/2 mo old.

Hicntry:

What is the story? Out calling coyotes and the cat showed up or where they out looking for cats?  It is a nice sized lion at any rate.

I have wanted to go Mtn. Lion hunting behind dogs for some time; just gotta find someone to go with!

I'd guess that it probably won't happen very often. Good for her that she has the heart to go after a lion, but if it were me, I'd make sure she didn't go solo after a healthy one. A lion that size wouldn't have a lot of trouble killing a dog. Dogs that have that much heart and drive are the real deal and I'd save her for hunting in a pack where the other dogs can distract a dangerous animal and bring it to bay without trying to do the killing themselves.

Anyone who says that Airedales are for show haven't seen the real McCoy, I imagine. Your dog sure is the real deal.

They were calling coyotes and the lion came in to the call. They also got 6 coyotes and Lucy got to put the finishing touches to a couple of them.

Nabob, the first thing I told him was that it was a bad idea letting this pup trail up the lion without being restrained. A local hound hunter that has worked with him and Lucy already told him the dog was to aggressive for lions but would be great for bear. Lucy's owner also has a 6 year old GSP that is very dominate and has whipped hers share of dogs. The GSP jumped Lucy when she was 6 mo old and he had to pull Lucy off his GSP. He said the GSP steers clear of Lucy since then.

20 some years ago I read about a hound guide over in far west Colorado that ran an Airedale with his Plott hounds for bears as a catch dog. If I remember right, he claimed that the Airedale had more heart for the fight than his Plott's. Think I'd be a bit cautious with a 7 1/2 month old pup. It probally has a lot more want to than can do!

Nice Lion!!!!

Good story and a good looking airdale. Do you raise them for sale or are they only for your use ? If you do sell one of your pups what do you get for them ?........Joe........

Here is a littermate brother to Lucy(with the lion), Mijo. He is 7 1/2 months in the picture also. An older brother out of this cross just passed his Calif. State Therapy Dog Certification at 16 mo. Mijo (in this picture) just started in the Santa Clara Schutzhund Club and is the only airedale.
